Tachometer drive housing removal on 730

Has anyone knowledge on how to remove the tach housing out of a 730 block? Mine appears to have the broken end of the cable down in the square section and I haven't been able to coax it out. By the drawing in the parts book, it appears to just set into the block, but I found part of a C clip after etching out some J B Weld.

They are pressed in. You need a puller with the same thread as the nut that holds the cable in to pull the drive. It is an odd thread that needs to be cut in a lathe.

Thank you for the reply and confirming what I suspected. It appears to be 1/2" x 22 tip and tapered. I bet Case had a special tool for this, I just hope I don't have to remove the pump. After removing the JB Weld and trying to get it to move upward, I noticed black oil showing around the housing, so it may not be too tight, but it also says there was a problem before with it.

I made a puller out of a fine thread 3/4 inch bolt. I threaded it down far enough to make room for a short piece of pipe as a spacer, a nut, and washers. I drilled the end of the bolt to clear the inner part of the drive.

Thank you, that's a great way to do it. I'm going to turn a grade 2 bolt to 22 tpi and hollow the end as you did. The pipe trick will make it easier than trying to hammer it up.

I think the 3/4 fine thread is 16 threads per inch. If you have a thread gauge you can check the nut on the cable. My puller is loaned out right now but I can check a bolt for you.

Checking the hold down cup nut on the cable end comes up with 20 tpi. I tried a fine thread bolt and it was close but only turned a thread or so before getting hard to turn. I've got a soft 3/4" bolt turned and will see what happens today. Thanks for the help. Hopefully, I'll be able to post a picture of the housing and the puller later.

I went through mine, be it an IT, and couldn't find any mention of the tach housing. Just points out the difference between manuals. Is there a name/number on yours that I can use to find one like yours?
