Been trying to get the engine in my skid loader running right for couple months now. The original had valve issues. Some said they had problems with the valve seats coming loose and an overhaul kit cost $1200.00 not including the machine work and the valve problem. So first I found a used engine and put that in, but that didn't work out. The person who sold it was great and sent me my money back so that was good. So then I took mine apart to how bad it was. Turned out it was real nice inside except for the valves. So I took it to the guy that does my heads and he did the valves, honed the cylinders and put in new rings. Got it home and it ran great, but had a massive oil leak. So I took it out to find the leak but the fan blows the oil all over so finding the source was hard. Looked like the oil filter housing for the remote filter might be the problem. So I resealed that and put it back in. But that wasn't the problem. So I took it out and took it back to the engine guy. He thought that since he hadn't done anything with the flywheel side that maybe something got damaged there when he was working on it. So we took that side apart and put in new seals and gaskets. Put it back in, but had forgotten to hook up the vacuum hose for the fuel pump. So back out to hook up that hose. Back in and started it and still had the leak. So took it back out and back to the engine guy and we took it all apart again and put in new gaskets and sealed it all up again. Was real excited about that because we were so careful that we knew it wasn't going to leak now. This is what it looked like when done.

So put it back in this evening and cranked it up. STILL LEAKED! You might say I was somewhat disappointed. Lol. After a period of foul language and a suitable cooling off period I took it out again. This time I put it on the bench and hooked it up to run. Didn't take long to find the leak then. Turned out to be the new oil pressure sending unit I put on to be sure everything was good was the source. Oil was pouring out of it. The dang thing is in behind the tin and behind the cylinder so you can't see it and with the fan blowing the oil all over I couldn't see the start.

So tomorrow I'll get another new sending unit and put that in. I'll run it on the bench to make sure it's good this time. Of that don't work it's possible the whole thing might start on fire. Ok, not that, but I may whack it with a pipe or something. Lol

Gotta love brand new broke parts. Picked up a 1816B last week with belt throwing issues. May have to pick y'alls brains when I get into the diagnosis on it.

Nothing is easy with a Onan, I have went through a pain full h_ll with 2 of them, I can relate to the language but I went a step further and had "strong drink"... But I did find the problem as you did. When they are running right they really are grand. It turned out to be one of the carb set screws, I had paid a guy too put a carb kit into it, but he didnt put the new oring around the set screw, so it had no resistance to stay put, once you set it, it would work fine, then as you ran it, it would move around and shut down. I did learn something,, look over the parts they use.

That's why a lot of guy's repower their Case GT's when the Onans go bad. Onans are too expensive to fix/overhaul.
