thoughts on Case 1494

Tractor shopping for a new tractor and came across a Case 1494 with cab and loader that looks in good condition. How well do these hold up and are parts generally available still? Any issue or problems to look out for specific to this model? It has about 7000 hrs which is a little high but I don't think a deal breaker. I'm needing something 50-100hp, 4wd, front loader in $10k-$20k range for snow plowing, working compost/manure pile and brush hogging on 20 hilly acres. I don't have any experience with Case so I appreciate ya'lls thoughts.

Others like RG Martin are more
knowledgeable but I have had one for a
number of years. No cab so I can't speak to
the a/c or heat. We have abused it ours
but it has done a lot of work. If you plug
in the block heater it starts well. It is
a David Brown tractor so you need a limey
mentality to work on it. Parts have been no
problem, many parts interchange with other
models so salvage yards are always a
possibility. I like mine well enough I am
restoring it down to an engine rebuild.

My father bought a Case 1390 new and we still have it and use it. We have a large cherry farm near Traverse City in Michigan. For a good share of its life it was our sprayer tractor. So the PTO was in constant use driving the four foot wide blower on the back of the sprayer. This was a very heavy load on the PTO.

Compared to a Ford 5000-7000 series the clutches are weak. We have had to replace ours. When my father died the tractor acted low on power. This is when we discovered that both final drives were dry. We filled them up with oil and everything was fine. We have never replaced anything but the clutch. None of the bearing have ever failed even when badly abused. The center pin holding the front axle started to work its way loose but we caught it during one of our normal inspections before it came all the way out and no harm was done.

Really economical on diesel fuel. Overall a good solid tractor. The transmission has four ranges and at least the top two gears in each range are syncromeshed so you can shift on the move.
