50 year old needs a little fixing (part 1)

My 1170 needs a little fixing. I’m 82 so the work will have to be done now while I am still able and a little at a time (started back in Nov). Four things needed fixing so I started fixing the more pressing problem--- the weak clutch. The hard to replace batteries were still cranking okay but about 8 years old. Cab interior needs help. Brakes have to be bled frequently.

I already replied about the clutch on 1/21/21 (see 1175 comfortking). A lip seal was letting some oil weep into the clutch. The clutch assembly and the throw out bearing were still good. I lucked out with needing only new seals and a new pilot bearing—and cleaning up the friction surfaces.

January found be dealing with the hard to replace batteries. As many of you probably know, many of the 70 series batteries are under the floor board. Over the years, I found replacing the batteries to be a struggle. Now that I am old, the struggle has become too much. Time for plan B.

The old batteries and the battery box show no signs of corrosion so they will rest in peace where they are. I installed Farm and Fleet’s strongest battery on the right side as shown in the pictures. My first attempt did not provide sufficient clearance for the right front tire to turn hard to the right. I had to cut and re-weld the new battery frame some. Mistakes are becoming more frequent with age.

I have started on the cab interior. I plan to post part 2 when I get further along. I have a cab kit from Fehr but still in the box.

Chuck Machinist, Thanks for the info about Ladd upholstery doing your tractor seat. Alan Ladd is soon going in for rotator cup surgery and will be laid up for about 6 months. I have ordered some aftermarket part from the local CaseIH dealer.

Bought my 1170 in 1979. With a new paint job and trading in a 800 Case diesel it cost $11000 to boot. Mine has the front weights and side rails. Put a clutch in it in the middle 80s cause the throwout bearing went bad...good tractors!

Ron,

That's a great idea for mounting the battery where you can access it easy. The under the cab design was not one of Case's better details. I'm going to do the same on my 1175 now. Thanks for posting. Don

To lazy myself for all that work, cut my box in half reinforced the open ends added extra bolt and nut for the rear half box. Only have to deal with one battery at a time now can even change with front loader brackets in place. On a 970. Tom

It appears your 1170 has the engine oil cooler and two filters. Was that an upgrade somewhere along the line? I found the 1170 to be a good workhorse. Quiet and very comfortable seat. Great engine.

I raised the horsepower to 150 in the mid 80s and added the double filter and cooler set-up off a 1270. Been an extremely trouble free tractor. Still does a lot of work even though I have a 2470 and 4690....

If I remember right the 1070 power shift I bought in the fall of 74 was $12,000 plus a few dollars. I had no trade in. This was when new tractors were scarce and it was a sellers market.
