Thank you Mel for giving Dave and me a definitive answer about removing the head on our 630 gas 188 engine. There is NO head bolt behind the water pump on a 188 gas motor, unlike the diesel version. We were nervous about prying and pulling too hard until you confirmed that for us. The head most likely has never been removed before and seemed almost welded on. It took hours of soaking with PB Blaster, prying, and pulling with an engine hoist until it finally came off. Simply a case of carbon/rust buildup between the head studs and head bolt openings. Never would have dreamed a head would be that hard to get removed. By the way, the service manual doesn't address removing the head after 56 years of service. LOL
Thanks again Mel, you made our day. Don
