I bought a Case 311 that needs a little work. I removed the hood and I noticed that the air-cleaner does not have a cap on it. Just sets under the sheet-metal open on top. Is that normal for that tractor?

The open pipe at the top fits through the hood and draws air from the screened area on the top of the hood cap. Good idea to take this cap off and
make sure the screens are rust free as this would be hard to replace.

Presuming that you are referring to a 311 RN and not a 311B. Take a look at the curved
front part of the hood ahead of the flip up hood cover and you will see a series of
small holes drilled around the sides. If you look closer through the grill opening,
you will see a sheet metal pan with a hole in it big enough for the intake tube
protruding up out of the air cleaner. the hood sets down over the intake tube and
prevents large particles from getting drawn into the oil bath cleaner.-------Loren

I had the hood off for probably a year and a half. I forgot how the hood fits on the tractor.
Will, today I finally finished the work on the tractor and put the hood back on. It worked out like you said. Thanks
