I have been working on this tractor for a week. It has no model number plate. But the engine is G148B. I have been using online material for a Case 430CK/480B/580B. I have flushed and replaced all fluids and most of the engine gaskets too. This is my first project like this and have no major experience. I pulled it out of my shop today very exited. But i could not get it to start. Turns over nice but no firing. i have narrowed the problem i think to spark. I get a spark with the high tension lead taken off the distributor cap and put near the frame. I get a nice spark. But when i put the lead back on i get nothing (have had a spark at 1 plug but intermittent) New plugs and new looking spark leads put on by previous owner i think. The other picture is of the electronic ignition inside the distributor again put in by a previous owner.
Any ideas would be great. Have been all over the forums since i got this tractor a year ago and would love to get it running while i am quiet at work.

Since you state you have a good spark out of the coil high-tension lead you have a problem with the cap and/or rotor or there is a mis-match between the ignition module, the magnet ring, distributor, distributor cap or rotor.

If the cap and rotor are correct and in decent shape it's POSSIBLE that the EI is firing the coil at the wrong time, when the tip of the rotor is not near a sparkplug wire terminal in the cap.

It would not be the first time that has happened due to one of the the EI components or the complete kit not being correct for that specific distributor, as I previously mentioned.

As far as I am aware the 148B engine was only used in the 430 series tractor models. The factory distributor was Prestolite IAD-6003-2J. That is the same factory distributor Auto-Lite IAD 6003-2J that was used in the older 300-300B series tractor 148 engines. (Auto-Lite & Prestolite are the same Co with back & forth name changes).

The original Pertronic kit for that distributor was p/n AT 41/1541. I had 3 or 4 of those kits, all but one failed within 5 years. I think that p/n may have been discontinued.

Check the tag on your distributor, Auto-Lite/Prestolite may be replaced with a Delco that takes a different ignitor. Use your tag info at an on-line Pertronic site to determine if you have the correct ignitor and view the installation/warning instructions.

Some pertronix kits for case require different cap and rotor combos than original to work. the instructions indicate what to do, but most people throw them out before even starting the install. With the new cap and rotor, retiming is necessary. Sounds like you need to contact pertronix online or with a phone call and start over.
Good luck

Thanks for all the info. I had a good look to find out the distributor model number but no joy. i also took all the spark plugs and cables off and put back together and somehow it started to spark. an hour later it was running. Smooth with a couple issues but i will start working on those. A little annoying that i do not know what the problem was. I guess i will put it down to a cable not being pushed in all the way or something.
