I found a transmission plug (1/2” Npt?) in Chuck’s DC-4. It is at the very bottom of the transmission housing. Is it’s purpose to draw off water that condenses in the transmission?

I could find no reference to it in the service manual

When Case put both brake pedals on the same side of the D series, they cast a ridge in the bottom of the transmission for clearance for the brake shaft going left to right. This required two drain plugs to get all the oil out of the transmission.

We know that 51-52 were transition years. My parts books indicate three part numbers for the transmission case. One number is for before 1945 (5575A). One number for 1952 and later (4302AA) The other part number was for the years 45 thru 51 (5900A).

There are clues in the parts book that either brake package will bolt onto the later transmission case. It makes sense that Case was anticipating the changes to be made in 52 and perhaps made the necessary bottom modification to the transmission case a year or two prior to 52.

I am curious if your 51 has the clearance "groove", for a later model brake cross shaft, cast into the bottom of your transmission case.

Thanks for the pictures.

Typically, Case would have been field testing the 52 model in 51. This would have forced the foundry to have two versions of pattern equipment on hand in 51 OR to have modified the 45-51 version of the foundry equipment and give the transmission case a new part number.

I do not know where the part number on your case is but would be curious what it is.

I will look and see if I can find the numbers on the transmission case, if so I'll post them along with the tractor serial number. It could be near the end of the 51 production

The casting numbers on the main transmission case just above the right side brake pedal is 6175A the tractor serial number is 5525448DC the tractor and engine block numbers do match as well
