Tight filter canister

Went to change the hydraulic filter on the 770. Drained the canister and then tried to unscrew the bottom, one 1/1/4 wrench, two 1/1/4 wrenchs , tapping all around with hammer, tapping all around with bigger hammer, tapping all around with big hammer with a 6 pound hammer held up to the opposite side, and using a big cold chisel and one of the a fore mentioned hammers. Nothing. Maybe air gun next? Would like to use the 770 the next few days so I'll wait til then. Any other ideas? Thanks.......Ron

I had to use an air gun to get mine broke loose on an 1170

A good impact will rattle just about any thing loose, go both ways with it until you get some movement. Wrench is probably best to work it the rest of the way off, work it back & forth to clean the threads to keep them from galling.

They can be a real bear. We tried tapping with a hammer and it split right open. Salvage yard would not attempt to open the replacement. YOYO-you're on your own, they said. Our local machinist/welder lightly heated it and turned it loose with a pipe wrench and a four foot long pipe. This one didn't break. Good Luck! Don

they can be a real bear. don't leave the relief valve in the old filter or you will get a big surprise, I have shipped those valves all over the country.

After U get it off with a 3/4" impact and perhaps a little heat, make sure threads are clean and cap will screw on freely by hand.

What everyone else said...... two weeks after battling a very stuck one I had it blew apart. Machine had been sitting busted 20 years so it was a bit tight. With good luck you will have the bypass valve in the bottom of your filter like Fred Said . They don’t need to be wailed on either when reinstalling, just snug.
