1969 Case 730 Stalled, Won''t Start

Hello everyone. I have a good friend with a 1969 Case 730. He ran it empty of fuel 2 weeks ago. Once he refueled the tractor, and primed it, it started and ran well. He was able to use the tractor for 2 hours. While driving, it began to struggle to run and stalled. He says it will fire up and high idle, but only for less than a minute, and it stalls again. We are wondering if he picked up some junk from the bottom of the tank, when he ran it empty. I am mechanical, but have never worked on a tractor. I see what looks like 3 fuel filters. The first two(lower on the engine) are actually painted the engine color. The third(higher and closest to the fuel pump) is not painted. Would you recommend changing 1 or more of the filters? Any direction would be appreciated. Thank you. If it helps, he believes it is a CK model.

those cases are kinda tricky to bleed. i used a blow gun to bleed last night 900 and turn it over on decompression till the front final
filter has fuel flowing out. kinda surprised me how easy it started for sitting 40 years. but your not telling us on his filter condition if
they were changed or old or what. the 2 lower ones are canister filters. at least open the drain cocks and check what comes out. if brown
rust and water you have filter problems. do some checking. then post what your finding.

Change all 3 filters, bleed them , drive on. First 2 filters are cartridges inside the housings you see painted flambeau. Have fuel tank right
full aids in bleeding filters.

Sounds to me , since you ran the tractor out of
diesel, but had it running again for two hours, then
you must have bleed air from the system when you
re fueled the tractor to make it run. So my guess is
you now have an air leak in your fuel system. What
did you open to bleed air out last time ? That would
be a good place to start looking. Bleed the fuel
system, and check for fuel drips. If you change the
third or top fuel filter, fill it with fuel before you install
it, helps. I have had issues with cracked lines
coming from the injector pump in the past, but that
mostly sprays fuel on the engine while it is running.

Thank you to all who have replied. We would like to change the filters out. I assume the first 2 filters(painted engine red) are the primary and secondary filters. Are they serviceable? Can I remove and clean, or just replace? I see the bowl is a different size for each. Is there a code for the motor, or should I simply search 1969 Case 730 fuel filters? Not to sound too dumb, just wondering if there were different engine options in the 730 model. Thanks again.

Hi:

I had a similar problem several years ago. While replacing filters is a good idea, I wanted to know what the problem was. What I did is set up a temporary fuel supply to the primary (larger canister) fuel filter. Started the tractor. It ran as long as I kept fuel in the temporary fuel supply. Turns out there was an obstruction at the elbow of the fuel line. Cleared that and the tractor ran fine.
