Read about my rubber seat spring problems here :

I am looking into what it takes to fit a steel spring and shock absorber onto my 1958 CASE 400 Diesel tractor. The new rubber spring broke in no time at all ... just like somebody on this forum said it would. Sorry I forgot who but you were right 100%.
The block of wood I used before getting a new rubber seat spring is not adequate anymore for my old bones. Do I have to get a whole new seat assembly ? Has anyone put a spring or shock onto a seat that had a rubber spring ? If so, how ?
Suggestions ? Parts needed ? Photographs ? Help ? Least expensive method is best. I can weld and do some basic fabrication if needed.

Chuck, you must have got a lot better one than I did when I got mine! I was not happy at all with mine, If I had been told later what I was told when I complained about it failing I never would have wasted the money, it only lasted about two years on a tractor that is hardly run.
I bought the tractor more for sentimental reasons as I worked at the dealership where it was sold new and the family who owned it all it's life were friends and the son who later took over the farming operation was a schoolmate. It never works and is under roof so it has not been mistreated, the rubber just tore up and looks brand new.

Chuck,
Does you seat go back like mine ? Do you ever sit in it in the rear position ?

Maybe part of my problem with the broken rubber seat spring is my weight. maybe it's from making the mistake of sitting down when the seat was in the rear position. I guess I need to buy the operator's manual to see if that is not supposed to be done.
Apparently not every CASE 400 has a seat that can side back out of the way. I always push it back when standing so it isn't clipping the back of my legs.
Sometimes I sit down on the seat when it's in the rear position. I'm sure that adds stress to the rubber seat spring. Maybe that's why I have broken the old one and the new one ???
For now I am using an old coil spring from the rear of a 2000 VW Jetta. I cut some off the big end to make it about 9-1/2" long. The small end is a good fit around the boss for the seat yoke pivot. The top end fits inside the seat frame. This will have to do until I figure out if I want to try another rubber spring or not.

Quoting Removed, click Modern View to see
CORRECTION:
It is a 1956 large frame round nose CASE 400. Not a '1958 as it says in the title. Sorry about that.

I would use an overload shock for a car the one with the spring and make a mount and attach it to the back of the seat.

For the DC, big 400, 730, 830, and other similar tractors the shock absorber with the spring around it from a WD 45 Allis works very well and is easy to mount to get the support needed. If you are a BIG guy you may need 2 of them. I used the same spring/shock absorber on my 930 CK and it works very well, but it was quite a job to get it mounted under the seat nice and neat where it is enclosed with the original tin. I do not see it working on something like a 400B. An air bag would hold the seat up, but some kind of linkage would need to be fabricated to keep the seat from tipping. If someone out there has a solution, PLEASE let us know!

I found that out after I spent the money for my 53 DC rubber springs, total junk and no recourse, I did a lot of fiddling around and adapted snowmobile suspension springs and got a workable setup but if keeping originality is important that is not an option, I have a early 530 that also needs rubbers and I am thinking about a small airbag, maybe like a truck cab airbag if I can find one that fits the space available. I'm sorry you had the same experience that I had, maybe it was me you were referring to as having told you previously. I do not see how a company can in good faith make things that poorly and sell them, My 1961 530 springs are just now failing and my DC replacement springs I do not think lasted 2 years and that is a rarely run tractor.

I have looked at some of those aftermarket seats with suspension. They have all sorts of slots for all different kind of tractors, but I don't see any of the holes lining up with either the vac or 351, so modification would be needed.

Rubber springs from John Saeli, are the best. Six years plus, still providing good cushion for my lard butt. CM
