I got the 830 home yesterday that I bought at an online auction to rob the motor for my w7 loader. It was missing the distributor and I took a chance and bought it anyhow. I put the distributor out of my w7 in it today and got it running. It runs well and carries 45 psi oil pressure. It does puff a little blue smoke every once in while idling. It does have a little more blow by than I would like but for 700 bucks I guess I cant complain too much. I am going to run a compression test on it tomorrow. I changed the oil in it but there is no spring in the filter canister to hold the filter tight against the housing. My w7 didnt have one either. It must be common for guys to loose these while changing the oil. I hope I can buy a new one.

$700.00??!! Worth way more than that. Yes there is a spring to hold the element forward. I know your predicament, but that tractor is too nice a unit to parts out. Clean it up and re-sell it & look for an engine.
 
the motor is almost out. I would fix it up if I could find another motor. I can get an 800 motor but it would be correct for an 830. can you but the filter spring new?
