970 hot trans oil

Hello, first I would like to thank the people on this site for the advice in repairing our power shift trans ( it had a violent engagement when letting off the inching pedal). I split the tractor & resealed the power shift but I did not see anything obvious but I'm happy with it now. )When round baling, the trans temp gets close to the red on the gauge but the engine coolant temp is still in the lower green. I cleaned out the trans cooler of hay & stuff but after about an hour of baling it gradually get hotter. I am now concerned about it or do these trans run hot when the pto is being used?
 
Jim, that was never a problem in my service area but does the tractor work ok otherwise? The reason I ask is the return oil from the 8 GPM circuit goes over the cooler and if the 8gpm side of the pump is down on delivery that oil would not be available to the cooler. If you notice slow steering at low rpm with the oil hot that would be a clue, other than that a remote sticking and not returning to neutral would build heat. I presume you are just using the remotes on the tractor to run a cylinder, nothing that would cause remote flow at all times?
 
Something simple I've run into, is that an operator will raise the draft arms all the way up, which is no problem, unless they are not "cancelling". If that is the case, the pump is always forcing oil thru the relief valve causing heat & damage. If you are running w/ the arms all the way up, try lowering them a bit when operating & see if the condition stops.
 
Both John and Mel's suggestions are real possibilities as to the cause of your problem. I would just like to add the cooler sometimes can look clean but still be blocked with dust and chaff not noticeable from the outside. Years ago a customer with the same complaint that did custom baling had a plugged cooler that looked clean. A careful washing with high pressure hot water made a huge difference. Using the pto on a warm day will cause a gradual temperature rise but usually not to the red. Most often another heat source as the guys mentioned is needed to get it that hot IF the cooler is doing it's job. We can not over look the possibility of drag in the Power Shift if that was serviced, Rod.
 
I have not noticed any poor steering at low speed & the 3 point arms are down low. The remotes are hooked to the baler so they should be in the neutral position . I will hose out the cooler & will bale with it tomorrow. What in the power shift could be dragging to cause this? It does take some time to come to temp & then with the pto on it gradually climbs which leads me to wonder if the pto part of the trans could have a problem. Thanks again. Jim S
 
Hello, I used the tractor today round baling & mowing but I ran @ 1500 rpm & it did not get hot. That seems strange as the same amount of power is going to operate the implement . I would have thought a higher engine speed would be easier on the trans & keep it cooler.Now I am watching the trans temp gauge & missed a couple of warnings to stop before the net wrap starts & made some ugly bales . Thanks for all the suggestions. Jim S
 
jim on van isle, you are the man just got a 970 that the pto didn't work pulled the IPTO housing to check it out, after checking pressure. I didn't see anything of concern so I searched the web and low and behold there was your comment to pull fill neck... your old comment just saved me a pulling apart the clutch pack and the rest of the works, thank a lot!!!...

It sounds like your hydraulics are bypassing some where increased rpm should help cool fluid as it would be using the increased flow to offset the power needed to do the work, it's high pressure with vary little flow that heats fluid quickly. so something on your tractor is calling for pressure like the transmission pilot valve, your 3 point, or something as simple as my 970 has a push pull valve to run the loader or switch to rear remote if there was something stuck in there or it was not all the way in or out the tractor would over heat.
