A customer told me yesterday that he was instructed to always add an extra 5 gallons of Transmission Oil to the tranny's of the 70 Series tractors, after the top bulb had filled. He said he also has read those instructions on forums. I have never seen that or heard that before. Is this a common practice that I have neglected all these years? Maybe I need to socialize more.

We always did this with 12-1570s. It helps lube the planaterys and in the hill it will not starve the hyds of oil. That is why they came out with the dipsticks on the later ones and the update.

Yes John, there was also a problem with starving the lower shaft , we redid a 1570 that had welded 4th gear to the shaft and was also instructed to run them 5 Gal. high. IIRC you could move a slider on the dipstick to reflect the new added oil level.

As far as the shaft and gears gauling and welding themselves together, the ones with the old smaller style transmission case were all spur gear trannys, the later styles used constant mesh and sliding collars so gears not being used are idling but always meshed so they rotate. They are not bushed gears. 4 th gear was the one I did over because of this problem, it was a 1570.

It was never advised to add extra oil to the smaller trannys with or without powershift.

You can install the extra lube line that goes in the front of the pinion shaft for 12-1570s that they came out with. works very well.

Drawback of the dipstick mod program Case offered was the additional 5 gal could cause rockshaft seals to leak. Countershaft lube line kit you mentioned is a must when I had a 12 thru 1570 split.

Case had instructed us to do that to a few 12-1370's in a certain ser.no. range. Then the dipstick kits came out for those tractors. After tractors were equipped with the pinion lube line they no longer needed the extra oil. But we had a service rep that said heck if you want to throw a extra 5 gal in go ahead, won't hurt anything, Rod.

J; the 1175 has the spur gear transmission. the 5 gallon mod was for the 12 and up constant mesh tractors.
