Oil Pressure.

I'm still pecking around my 600B making repairs. One thing I noticed yesterday during a test drive is that the oil pressure drops to zero after the engine is warmed up. This is at an idle speed of 500-550rpm. I checked the repair manual and it gives an oil pressure, at high idle, of 14-20psi. What is considered as high idle? Is this something I need to remedy?

You probably know this, but just in case. I had the same trouble with my tractor. If you have the upright screw on filter take it off and make sure the last time the
filter was changed the tube that runs through the center wasn't discarded with it. Mine was either gone before I got it or it went with the filter when i changed it. You
can fashion a new tube out of copper.

I wouldn't want to see less than 14 @ 550 RPM. 1st thing to do is put a gauge in the port on the block to double check the dash gauge. We have a 350, w/ the same engine that had no oil pressure. Ran sweet, so I pulled the engine, left the head on, turned it upside down, removed the crank which needed machining, re-installed w/ new bearings, ect, re-built the oil pump. That was 30 years ago. Always use 15W40 oil, carries excellent pressure. Be prepared to do at least that.

Kenbob, I already ran into that when I changed the filter. Thanks for pointing it out though.

John Saeli,
Not what I really wanted to hear, but it had to be said. I'm not sure I want to go that far at this time. I'm only one notch above a shade tree mechanic. Meaning I don't have the tools it would take to remove the engine from the tractor. I'm going to think about this for a while. But I will check the pressure at the port. The new gauge I just installed might be at fault.

My gauge still doesn't run very high when hot, so if you get a good gauge and check it at the port, let us know what you find.

I haven't checked the oil pressure at the port yet, because I don't have the right fittings to do so. I'll report back any findings when I do more tests.

That was the trouble I had. I had a gauge but not the right fittings. Didn't press it further. but if you do, I would like to know how yours turned out.

Here's what I learned so far. I tried three different gauges at the dash end of the oil line. Two gave the same pressure values with the odd one out was the new gauge I just purchased. I also checked the literature I have for the 600B and found two different values given for the oil pressure. One being from a I&T repair manual, and the other being the operators manual. I decided to go with the operator manuals oil pressure specifications. That being 15-17psi with engine warmed up and at full throttle. That's where the oil pressure gauge now reads on my 600B, with the engine at operating temperature of 160 degrees and full throttle.
