Case # 10 mower

I hooked on to the old Case hay mower to do some farmstead trimming and noticed the wooden pitman arm is on its last legs. Is there a source for these or do I need a wood butcher to make a new one? Thanks, Don

Hi Don. Is your old pitman arm still intact yet? I ask, because I had a new idea years ago and mine went bad also. So I made my own out of a piece of red oak. Worked great. Probably should have been softer wood, but that is what I had on hand. Kow Farmer Kurt

Boys - You need strong wood, but wood with flex. Back in the early automotive days, Ash was the choice for many frames and bodies. Franklin used it into the teens. Hickory is a choice for old wagon reaches, the connection between the axles. Tongues for horses have to be strong but not brittle, can't have those snapping. Find good straight white ash (not green or mountain ash), with as close a grain as possible would be my choice. Hickory is not a MN wood, so not real familiar with it. It's the choice for a million years for wood rims on wagons and cars, oak spokes but hickory rims..... Find an Amish man, he'll have a source for either.......... Larry
