what i am wanting to do is get a block or engine from a 700, 800, or 830 diesel . the sleeves are so rusted in this 400 block i dont think
they will come out. so was going to look for a diff. engine or block. from what i found the 400 is 251 cid, 800 267cid, 830 301 cid.wonder
if its the piston sizes that are diff. in the diff. cid. of these engines. the 900 has the same size pistons as the 400. like to know the
best combination with the easiest amount of work.plus this would eliminate that goofy american bosh pump. that is seized also.
 
The 400 251 is 4", the Super 400 267 is 4 1/8, the Super 400 overbore 284 is 4 1/4, the 830 301 is 4 3/8 IIRC. Don
 
so is the 830 engine something that is a bolt up to the 400 i presume it is. and those bores you are talking about is the sleeves thinner to increase the bore in those tractors?
 


If it were me, I would not give up easy attempting to get those sleeves out. It is probably the rust on the inside of the sleeve that you are seeing. The rust on the outside of the sleeve may not be real bad.


Are there pistons rusted in the sleeve? If the pistons are out, I would do the obvious------ try a sleeve puller.


If there are pistons present and rusted in, I would consider two or three options. Option 1. With head and pan off, remove all four rod bearing caps from the crankshaft journals.


This allows turning the crankshaft to push up on ONLY TWO of the four pistons without consuming force to pull down on the other two pistons.

If the pistons happen to be near top and bottom dead center, turning the crankshaft, with rod caps off, has a great mechanical advantage to push upward and perhaps start moving two of the sleeves out of their bore. Whether successful or not, turn the crankshaft the other direction to try pushing the other two sleeves out of their bore.


Option 2. I am not sure there is a downside to carefully breaking the pistons out of the sleeves. Pounding too hard might break the upper shoulders of the block the sleeves are supported by. Whatever gets broken, it was mostly all junk before trying to break the pistons out. It’s hard to damage junk. LOL


If this block is still in the tractor and if the pistons are significantly away from dead center, there might be another option. With rod caps off, use a hyd jack and push up on one of the crank journals using a piece of wood between the crank journal and the jack. This can assist turning the crankshaft--- up to the point of lifting the front of the tractor off the ground. Clear as Mud? LOL
 
i am quite experienced at this stuff. had a jack pushing on one rod with the whole front of tractor off the floor. sleeves are totally rusted inside and out side of the bore. i am removing block and stripping it down then going to hot tank it then clean up the outside bottom of sleeves and use a press to see if they will pop out. might break the block in this process. thats why i was asking if i can just find an 830 block that would bolt right up with a few more H.P. this is one of the very worst cases i have worked on. pun also! if i could get a picture posted i would but since this site overhaul there is no "browse" at the bottom, so i cant access pictures. that "choose files" thing dont work.

Yes, an 830 engine will bolt up to a 400. Sorry, I don't know about what sleeves fit what block. John Saeli would though. Don
 
Try welding a bead on the inside, down the length of the sleeve three or four times spaced out evenly.This will cause them to shrink.
 
i have done that also in the past, not possible here. pistons are too high and still in sleeves, as i said. i was not asking how to get them out as i pretty well knw im almost hooped. was more interested in a replacement engine which i got little info on.
 
I think it was Jon F Mn that put one in a 400, He had to do some mods but it pretty much bolted up to the trans and front casting.
