870 8spd Sight glasses clouded over

On my 870 gas 8spd the hydraulic sight glasses on the left lower tranny, rear end housing are clouded over. Actually to the point that it is hard to see if the hydraulic fluid level is correct. Do these cloud over with time & heat. Do these thread out & if so are they very breakable. Should I leave well enough alone & just guess the level is ok. About all the hydraulic work it ever does is raise a wagon hoist once in a while. Thanks Gerald

They can be removed but seem very brittle and can be easily broken as I have done a few times. Do not use a pliers, I have broken everyone trying that, my best luck has been using a rubber jar opener type pad a working by hand. Hopefully someone has a great safe procedure that works, Rod.

I fought the site gages on my 1170 for many years and then I got creative.

I parked the tractor on level concrete and did some vertical measurements. I calculated the oil level, when at the top site gage (full), to be 8.25 inched below the top edge of the fill tube when the tractor is setting level.

I bent a piece of heavy wire as shown to be a dipstick. The loop on the end is for hanging it on a hook inside the cab. When measuring, the 90 degree bend rests on the upper edge of the fill tube. The kink is 8.25 inched below the 90 degree bend representing full. The 3 inches below the kink gives me an indication of how low the oil is. The oil level on the wire is easy to see.

I always use it with the engine stopped so it does not get caught in a gear.

And I will add that I’d you do successfully get them out and clean them like new it won’t help a whole lot. And if you break one, the replacements from CNH are a different design jand more difficult to see the oil.
I like Rods idea. I just did the same thing on my Ferguson. Darn dipstick must have got pulled out by brush while spraying.
Tongue in cheek question for other Case guys - I’ll bet Hytran is easier to see than Hygard...?
