Case 380 PTO clutch won''t disengage

Hi all,

New user, first post. Just acquired a Case 380. The transmission clutch seems to work fine, I can shift into and out of gears 1, 2, 3 & R. The PTO clutch however does not seem to disengage. When I depress the clutch pedal fully, trying to move the pto lever results only in grinding. I thought I would crawl under the tractor and take a peek at the clutch through the access panel, expecting to see an old, worn out clutch. Instead I see what appears to be a brand new one. Any ideas? Anything I can do or check short of splitting the tractor?

My 380CK has the same problem. I have not had the time to split the tractor to determine the problem.

I get around this issue with my bush hog by raising it, then turning off the tractor. Engage the PTO, then crank the engine.

I have been using this workaround for several years without the PTO clutch finally breaking free a under a heavy PTO load.

If you get around to splitting the tractor and determining the problem before I do, then let me know. Otherwise, I might split my tractor this winter and fix it. I'll post the cure on this forum if I get it fixed before you do.
 
It would be helpful if you had a service manual to look at, if that is the two stage clutch there is an adjustment that is done through the bottom access, there are 3 adjustment screws that must be set with a feeler gauge that contact the rear pto pressure plate and release it as you push the pedal past where tractor motion stops. Right off hand I think that .060 thou between the screw and the rear pressure is close. Maybe some one on here will post a pic so you can see but it's not hard once you see it, if you turn the flywheel with a screwdriver you will see one, adjust it then turn another 1/3 of a flywheel turn you will find another one etc. till u do all 3.
