My regulator has only 2 terminals. I am un able to find one to replace it. It overcharges and I have been unable to get it down to the proper 7.5 charge rate. It stays between 12 and 20 charge rate depending on my r p m Also if I can find one, which terminals do I use to polarize it? Thank you for any information.

A "two terminal regulator" is not a voltage regulator, but, rather, a "cutout". Search using that term and you'll get many, many results.

Likely, your generator is a "third brush" type meaning that it has three brushes, one of which is made to be moved to set the charging rate.

Thank you for the information. I have a cutout ordered from steiners. When I install it do I need to polarize it? Thank you again.

The cutout connects battery to generator output when generator output is above a preset value so it charges the battery and disconnects battery when below that value to prevent battery from discharging through the generator.

You polarize the generator, not the cutout or regulator. With cutout, install it, connect battery, and before starting the engine momentarily jumper between the 2 posts on the cutout.

A resistor on the light switch assembly controls charge rate. Resistor is in series with the field post on generator. Resistor in circuit gives low charge, resistor bypassed gives high charge. As indicated charge rate is also limited by a third brush setting within the generator.

Is 7.5 the charging a voltage reading? Is 12 and 20 the reading on the amp meter? They are separate readings and have separate meaning.

Depending on the charge state of the battery and the accuracy of the volt meter, 7.5 volts could be in normal range.

Constant 12 to 20 amps could be normal when engine is first started, but should come down as battery is charged back from starting draw. 12 to 20 amps after running a short time is excessive and could indicate a bad battery or something constantly grounding the field post on the generator.
