Well I had some time last week and put on a 1 wire alternator. Got a ignition kit and wires from John. the tractor has been siting in my shop for 2 years or more, could not find the time to work on it. I had bought a new fuel bowl assemble and added fuel and leaks all over from the bowl. Got that fixed an hit the key and away we go. What a good feeling. now when I can get back to it I am thinking of changing the trans and rear end oil with hi tran, what are your thoughts? Jerry from Ohio

Glad to hear you got it running again, Jerry. The Owners Manual suggests 90W for the transmission assembly. Hytran is pretty thin compared to that, it may find some place to leak. Don

Put hytran in a Farmall C rear once, when I first began working on this old stuff. Noisy (really) trans/differential was scary. Loss of fluids from axel seals was extreme. Drained it & reinstalled 90/140. Quited the rear gears & eliminated leaks. Never do that again with an old one.

Stick with the 90w recommended. Hitran is user specific for the powershift transmissions beginning with the 70 series. Proper lubrication for the various clutch discs. Like mentioned below, way to thin, it'll be noisy and leak out everywhere. The 400 has a separate hyd recovoir. Larry

I thank everyone for there input on changing to hi tran .What I am going to do is flush it and then put in new fluids. Stay safe and remember our people who are serving and have served and also the people who lost there life so we could be free. Jerry from Ohio

90 wt is fine in a 400,, but I would not be afraid of Hy-Tran as the transmission is the very same as a EH 700/730/800/830 is,, and same basic system as late 730/830 has and they all use TCH/Hy-Tran,, ran it for many decades in all my 730/830's

Well years ago I restored a 400 and drilled a hole and threaded on lower front side of hydraulic housing. filled with Hy-tran and now hydraulics and tranny is one fluid. No problems yet. I did change all the seals with tranny rebuild. Installed a orchard ring and pinion. Now have a 25 MPH 400.
