I?m putting my rebuilt head on my 530 diesel tractor. I?m looking in the Repair manual at the torque specs. It shows step 1 to torque the head to 60 lbs.
then it shows step 2 to torque head bolts to 110-115 lbs ? I?m assuming the final torque is final torque is the 110-115.
Can someone verify the torque. Thanks

that would be yes for the final torque on the grade 8 bolts you have. I torque in 3 stages not 2 stages, then do a final check on them.

The manual will not tell you this but I would do a retorque after bringing the engine to operating temperature then allowing it to cool then retorque to spec by the pattern, loosening one bolt at a time 1/4 turn then bringing it back to torque, the back off is to break the initial resistance to breaking loose. do a reset on valve adjustment after this procedure.

on a fresh rebuild I have never saw anyone or myself back off the nuts to retorque a head. but yes a retorque is required after running to operating temperature for an hr. or two. plus a valve lash reset is a must as it will be tighter from the head retorque. you will gain 1/8 to 1/4 of a turn on the bolts.

Well said Mel!! A very important step that is often overlooked. And your advice of backing off 1/4 turn is straight from the CASE Service Manual. Usually gains close to 1/2 a turn beyond the initial 1/4.
