G10338 and A37602 Housing

G10338 early & A37602 late are the housings for the PTO shaft seal at the rear of the 4sp gearbox for the Rock Isle Tractors. Does the housing spin w/ the main shaft or is it stationary?

The PTO shaft seal housing is pressed on to the O.D. of the main drive shaft. The PTO shaft passes through the main drive shaft center and rotates independently with the main drive shaft, i.e. if you have a hand clutch, with the clutch engaged the main drive shaft and PTO shaft both rotate but independent rpm of each other, if the hand clutch is disengaged the main shaft stops and the PTO continues to rotate.

John, after reviewing the service manual I am not sure that the seal housing is pressed on to the main drive shaft or pressed into the transmission housing. The manual is not clear in that regard. I always thought it was pressed on to the main drive shaft. It's been a few years and my head is fuzzy except on replacing the seal in the housing.

Someone who would know for sure is Zach81 as he had a dinged up seal housing in an early 530 that was removed and reinstalled. I was involved in the post but didn't get involved with reinstalling the housing.

Regret that my explanation above may be in error. Would be very interested in a response from someone who knows for sure.

Joe, John and I had this conversation earlier this AM after reading his post, all earlier tractors had the press on the sliding gear shaft design. Later tractors had a different number carrier and pressed into the main transmission case and were of course then stationary. I have personally installed this update into earlier tractors. The carrier listed in the 570 parts page should be the updated design. That design change was in my hay day, in other words, a long time back but mt memory still works,----sometimes!!

Thanks mEl, in my original response I was dead sure it was pressed on the main shaft having replaced seals on early 430 and pre 60's tractors.

Been a while since I did a PTO seal job. I started having doubts and reviewed a 300/300B manual and couldn't prove it one way or another. so I guess bottom line is rely on memory and forget the manual? At my age (76) the memory route gets pretty iffy.

With a little coloring in Paint 3D is proof positive that my memory is still mostly intact, it appears that my reading comprehension isn't so good though.

The seal housing is pressed on the O.D. of the main shaft, the PTO shaft bushing is pressed into the main shaft I.D. so everything rotates with the main shaft separate rpm from the PTO shaft that passes through the center of the main shaft.
