1951 DC Case Rear Axle Seal

Hey Guys,

I'm hoping for some more help on the next leak I need to fix. There's transmission fluid running out of the end of the axle. This is on the left side when sitting on the tractor looking forward. Its a slow leak but enough to warrant fixing it, I hope. Any advice on how to replace that axle seal?

Thank you,
Mark

It is a pretty straight forward job. The hardest part is removing and reinstalling the tire and
rim.

They don?t make the felt dust covering anyone but I didn?t need it for my application.

I would take the time cleaning up the axle before carefully installing the new seal

I agree with Pastor John about getting the wheel off. I replaced the axle seal on my 49 DC and it took two persons to get the hub clamp bolts out. We carefully bumped the wheel with a loader tractor to break the rust at the key and axle.

I used a standard double lip seal that is available a lot of places. Also, there are thin sleeves available if there is a groove worn in the sealing surface.

I checked for end play in my axle. End play is not harmful except when tapered roller bearings are involved. Any end play at the tapered roller bearing causes the axle to run "off center" and this is hard on the seal.

If you can see the slightest vertical movement between the axle and housing, when lifting up on the axle, the new seal will be stressed. That may be why the old seal is leaking. To remove the end play, one has to get at the inner end of the axle and tighten the castle nut as needed.

Thank you guys - I circled the seal that I believe I need. Is this the correct seal? I can still get the seal through the local Case dealer. I'm sure it's more expensive but my thought was I just want to make sure it's the right one.

Thanks,
Mark

Hey Guys, One more question for you. I did get the new seal in. The old seal was about twice the size of the new seal that I used directly from Case. I'm wondering if it would make sense to put two seals in next to each other. My biggest concern is with only having one smaller seal dirt can work its way in from the hub side. Thoughts?

I also was going to mention that it was a bit of job to get the old hub off. I ended up using a small bottle jack to push the hub off the axle. That hub was on there.

Getting the old seal out was not easy either but we did get that out.

Thank you,
Mark
