Almost done planting crops for the year

I finished planting Barley and spring wheat for grain and hay some three weeks ago I guess now,, I still have a few acres of millet to plant yet also, I was able to get a couple fields planted yesterday back to hay ground with a barley cover crop mixed in. Thought some might want to see a few shots of the operation,, I had dug out my T510GM from storage and used it for the first time mixing the three seeds types together alfalfa,crested wheat grass and barley. The T510 had not been used since 1970 when the original owner we sold it new to had broken the main mill drive clutch after grinding only 12 loads of barley to feed his pigs and then never fixed it as he bought another ranch over the mountain and left the one here to just sit. I did fix every thing he had broken but will have to take the unloading auger system off as he must have left feed in it with salt or minerals that was corrosive and took out a bearing just above the gear box that drives the unloading augers, once that is done she will be back to 100%.

Nice pics. Thanks for posting. I always like how well your dry climate treats older equipment. Machinery here will rust up setting in the shed. Tom

Case Nutty,
Glad to read your crop is getting into the ground. Great pictures too. Thank you for sharing with us. Kow Farmer Kurt

Hi Case Nutty;

Nothing like social distancing on a tractor - especially with a cab! I have a couple of questions about your pictures - which by the way are always great. First off. What are the specs of the small scraper? (make model width/size) behind the 30's series tractor in picture number 12. This looks like a handy rig for lots of jobs around a farm! Secondly in picture 13 what model is the combine in the background - it looks like a 60's series for sure just can't figure out the size. And lastly in pictures number 11 and 14 (last one) is your 970 pulling a Morris rod-weeder? My dad used to use on of these in front of his 620 International drill for nearly all his seeding - great rig for seed bed prep ahead of the drill - at least in the soil on our farm. Any and all information is appreciated.

Best regards and stay well.

Tom, Great pictures and glad to see you are getting finished planting. We are down to the last corn field, we would be done but it is a test plot . Weather is cold here this morning 32 degrees but warming is coming. Just wanted to say thank you for the great information you give people on this site, oh yes and me . Take care and we will talk soon. Jerry from Ohio

Barry,, thanks for the kind comments,, the scraper is 6' wide cut I will say it holds about 1 1/2 yards maybe a bit more material,, Yes handy as a pocket on a shirt it is the combine you seen behind the VA with broadcaster is a 1060,, one of 13 running Case combines I use on my farm,, that one has had a LOT of bushels of grain through it as it came from irrigated county,, out of all the Case combines i have it by far has the most wear,, flighting sprockets ect,, the grain shoe supports finally gave out on it and I have not fixed it and not sure I will, it runs like a top still though,, I have a really nice 1160 inside also which is the same as a 1060 just built heavier for corn and bean crops,, the 970 is indeed pulling a Morris B-36 rod weeder we bought new in 1975, we also sold Morris new from the dealership,, we found with our growing winter wheat then it brought tot he surface the cheat grass seeds when using it for seed bed prep,, so it was not used a lot after about 1990 until my Dad had the idea to mount grader blades in place of the rod units,, it works GREAT for a leveler,, it has covered far more ground as a leveler than it did as a rod weeder and I used to cover 2500 to 3500 acres a year with it as a rod weeder both on our farms and did a lot of custom work with it the first few years, I added a shot of it and two of the machines I use one the smallest and largest a 600 with 10' hdr and a 1660 with a 20' hdr

Thanks. We had a 660 and a 960 combines on our farm. The 660 was bought new (replaced a SP 150 which had replaced an SP 12))and when the hour meter played out it had around 5000 hours on it - I think it ran for another 10 years after that. Dad bought it new (8400 dollars CDN as I recollect delivered and set up) and it was used on our farm and did lots of custom combining especially in it's early life. Wore out at least one grain pan and had the rocker shaft for the straw racks replaced twice - well welded once and replaced the next time it broke at the end opposite the original break. Dad worked as a mechanic for a local machine shop before he farmed and was adamant that all guards removed for maintenance were replaced - when the 660 was sold at auction it still had all the original guards in place pretty rare for a 30 year old combine at least where I came from. The 960 was a later addition, bought used after I left the farm so I know way less about it. Case did make some great combines (MHO!). Years after I left the farm I visited a organic farm in SE Saskatchewan (I was working in that area at the time). The farmer had 2 or 3 660 combines he used to combine his various types of beans - he said they were the only combines that could be set to thresh clean and not shatter the beans when they were dry. One further question. What tractor are you using to pull the small scraper with? - I can't make out the model in the picture. Keep the pictures coming - I can't speak for everyone, but I really enjoy them!

Cheers and stay well.

the one on the scraper is a very late 1969 530, last Case combine we sold new was a 69 960 I have it back today,,

Love the pics Tom. Love your equipment too. Hopefully the weather treats you right this year. RB

Combining alfalfa seed. One of our neighbors raised alfalfa seed and used a Case combine exclusively for his harvest - a 960 as I recall. He said they were the best combine for that type of seed and he had tried a couple of others. I don't remember combining alfalfa with our combines, but I do remember we custom combined about 50 acres of brome seed for a neighbor one fall. Very light seed - I seem to remember dad getting a special pulley to set the wind low enough so you didn't blow it all out the back.

Cheers and stay well.

Depending on the machine 600/660700/900/960 you can get slow speed fan range by swapping the driven and drive pulleys around, the bigger machines you have several low and high range pulleys like you speak of,, I have combined many types of seed,, Case machines can be set to save almost every seed, and clean it very well at the same time,, I forgot to add ay bin shots for you

Those are some great pictures and the combine pictures are just as good. You sure know how to set up your combines to do such a good job of clean grain/seed in the tank. The picture of the VA makes me miss my VAI I owned 35 years ago.Glad to hear you are doing well with your springs work. Thanks again for the pictures.
