Case Triple Range Question

Just checking to see if anyone knows if the triple range transmission on this 630 with the L on the serial tag for low gear has issues.

The right hand triple range shifter goes into all 3 ranges fine, but each one of them makes no difference on the transmission speeds, including reverse. In other words, the ranges seem to shift into fine, but the gears are all the same speed, so it's not changing the range.

I am wondering if the L on the tag means there is not a triple range? It doesn't say on the tractor anywhere, but the decals are long worn off. Or possible the shifter fork is not working correctly? Or maybe it's not a triple range at all? Any ideas.

It does have the left hand clutch shifter, which works correctly for the PTO. Thanks for any thoughts. Bob

And also note that on the serial tag, it appears to be 616xxx, and I believe should be 816xxx. I don't know then if the second 6 is really a 6 or an 8, not that it matters that much, just curious. Thanks - Bob

clearly that is a 6 ,,. keep in mind this 630 could be a 1960 build yr ,,. Not sure if the number system is relative to the Foot clutch SC and DC i have that begins with a 60xxxxserial. That caused some confusion when i got them as to whether CASE built my SC and DC in 1956, and I later Learned NO .When the new style 300-400-600 builds began there was a bit of confusion as to the why and relevance of 60s and the beginning of the 81XXX. The" L"on your tag denotes your tractor is lower geared and will not run 27 mph like a lot of triple rangers are dangerously capable of with a heavy load behind in our hilly Southern Ind country roads. Yours will still make 20 Mph or more. The triple range cover on your tractor should come off when shifted to neutral , then check the forks for damage or broken pins ,. realign the forks corresponding to the correct gears. THANK your LuckyStars and Gods guidance if You get it right the 1st time .. Don Livingston , Don Rudolph, Elmers repair and John Saelie is Great help for parts and knowledge .

"L" mean "low speed gearing" (there was "L" std and "H" options when ordering them)the serial is correct for a 1961 produced in Rock Island plant,, Racine starts with a "8XXXXXX" serial

Thanks to you both for your replies. I guess the Serial Number link on the left doesn't call out the Rock Island tractors, maybe. Thanks again - Bob

This is fact: The "L" on the tag means you have a low speed 4th. Consequently, an "H: would mean a high speed 4th. The letter only refers to 4th gear. As for the speeds not changing, you have a serious issue in the range box. My guess is that it is stuck in one of the ranges and the shift selector has come loose and not changing anything. Could be something as simple as a broken or lost roll pin. Remove the range cover and inspect.

Since we are dealing in "Facts" here is the Real truth about the "L" and "H" like I said,, it pertains to the gear ration as you can clearly see John like I have said all along there is a 4th high speed option and gear ratio options,, the first is just a change in two gears the other changes bull gears and bull pinion shaft ratios,, I have known this since the 60's when we ordered them in new, I also can easily tell the speed changes between them as I have several of all three gearing versions for instance my G430 has low speed gearing that came as the G430 package,, it also has the high speed 4th for roading

Tom: Let's back up. Bob says he detects no speed changes whether he is in L,D or H. Would you agree he has a problem in the triple range? You & I have a big problem of discernment if we disagree.

OK, it is in official CASE print that the "L" or "H" letter on the tag clearly refers to only 4th speed. Fact. Undeniable. Concrete. Written in stone long ago. That being said, how does one determine the bull gears for low or high speed overall in a dual range without removing the cover & counting teeth?

I agree with John, if it successfully drives in one range position then the problem is most likely in the shift arrangement. Pull the cover and check key, pin, set screws, worn balls, etc.

John yes if he has no speed changes in the range box he has problems there, I would not be surprised if someone had the cover off and missed the shift collars with the shift forks as that is what it sounds like and i have found more than once over the years causing that condition,, I had never said a word about the shifting issue until now,, so i do not know why you would think I was saying any thing about that issue I had only spoke of the facts about his asking about the "L" on the serial tag which still has nothing to do with a high speed 4th gear option even the VAI could be ordered with a high speed 4th gear I have one of those also it will do over 20 mph which is interesting if you touch a brake and they are not set evenly,, like mine is at the moment
