What do you think of Shell Rotella 15-40 for use in 70 series engines? Thanks, Don

Don,, its yours use what you want,, to me using that is the same as using the yellow bucket hyd oil instead of using a Quality oil like Hy-Tran,, makes no sense to me,, using a truck rated oil in a off road engine,, I guess I am one of the few who can see and feel the quality difference,, funny how the same ones recommend Hy-Tran for its Quality and fail to know there is a huge step up in engine oils also,, its all good though but for my equipment from my smallest Case compact a 210 10 hp to my 2670's they all use the Very Best oil available and always will,, I had a neighbor try to give me a barrel of rotella,, I did not even consider it for oiling a chain,, that is my opinion on it as asked for,, others have posted theirs,, now watch I will get flamed for speaking my mind,, again all good,, I use quality oils only in my equipment,, cheap to me I also use a high quality lithium grease instead of the thin black average grease most buy

Always used Rotella 15/40 in my trucks that I ran over the road with for almost 30 years. Last truck had 1.4 million miles on a Cummins engine before I overhauled it...never used much oil till you got over 12000 on a oil change. Changed at 12000 mile intervals. My one 504 in the 2470 has only Rotella, doesn't use any oil on 125 hour changes.

My CIH dealer will no longer carry the 30w anymore so I am out shopping for oil also. I can't comment about the Shell because I never used it. But many others have and from what I can tell most are repeat customers. Been around for a long time, if it was a bad product it would not be on the shelf yet. I think Cenex oils still carry a warranty of some sort when you use theirs, I might give that a try, Rod.

I used it in the three 400s I used to have. Seemed to work just fine.

Bought a new Ford F250 in 1989. 460 5spd whldr. Once the inital break in mileage was finished, Mobil 1 full synthetic. Gas V8 now has close to 600,000 miles on, uses no oil except rear seal leakage (show me a Ford w/o that) 2 timing chains is the only maintenance. Mobil one in the gearbox and the limited slip rear end, all functions as new. But, I started with new. Now, my Studebaker R16 farm truck I use 20/40 from Fleet Farm. I use that in all my lettered tractors, SC, DC etc. Modern ones like my 830CK diesel and my 1070 I use diesel rated 20/40. Higher houred engines. But it's like Ford/Chevy/Dodge/Stude (for Don) or red ones or green ones, perhaps the strength of the dealer and his service is a decider. They are all good, if SAE rated. Throw a dart and your choice is made. I started way back with Mobil one because I could buy it right in 55 gal drums, as good a reason as any. My 2 bits.............. Larry

Larry, your mention of Studebaker got my attention. Is your truck the big 6? I had a few Bakers for a while but now only Case tractors. I thought if Studebaker had paid more attention to their truck line they would have survived a while longer. I had a champ with a 259 and a 42 Commander 6. That was a sweet running machine.

RUH ROH! War time! Lol. Some hate it some like it, seams to be little middle ground. I used it exclusively in my trucks. The Cummins I had the longest had a million miles and near 30,000 hours when I sold it and as long as I changed the oil at 20,000 miles never needed any added. After that mileage it would quickly burn tho, and extra 3,000 miles would cost a gallon. The Volvo I bought new had 550,000 miles and 14,000 hours and used no oil when it went away. I put a little over 100,000 miles on a Kenworth with their engine and it always used a gallon per change. Knew when it was time by the add oil light. No recommendations from me, those are just the facts from a user.

Don: You want to start a war?? I believe there are different grades of the Rotella 15W40, some heavier duty than others. Find out what the truckers are using. Rotella 15W40 itself has been around for years, but Shell has upgraded from the original.
