'New to me' Case 430 Diesel Questions

I just picked up a 1966 430 Diesel. It is a bit rough looking and has some minor issues, but overall seems okay. I still need to pick up an operating manual. I already own a 530 (541) 1961 gas, triple range, NFE, which is convenient. I am going to take the loader off my 530 and put it on this 430. A NFE without power assist is obnoxious with a heavy bucket and wet ground.

1) Does this have glow plugs? Is there a starting procedure like a pick up (wait for plugs to warm, etc)? I don't have much mechanical experience on diesels. It is difficult to start.

2) It makes a whining noise at the back axles when backing up and maybe when driving fast forward. Is this something that needs a good greasing?

I am going to go start changing all the fluids for good measure. The rear end is a bit milky.

Thanks,

Your 430 diesel has a manifold heater that is activated by turning the key switch to the left for 20-25 seconds, then turning the key switch to the right to engage the starter. That's if it is still wired originally. Mine was not. When you turn the key to the left you should hear a distinct click of a relay to the manifold heater. If you don't hear the click, somethings not right.

As far as the whining noise, it is fairly common on these old machines, especially in road gear. I can't tell you if it is serious on not from a distance, but changing the fluids is a great idea. Good Luck! Don

I have an early 430 and it does have glow plugs. You can see 4 plugs going into the intake manifold on the right side of engine, with wiring. To operate
you turn key to on position and push a spring loaded button on the dash, for a minute or two, then crank engine over. You may also have a block heater,
located on the left side of engine, with wiring.

Whining is probably in the transmission. If the fluid is milky it needs changing. Manuals are available on eBay and other places.

Someone rewired it to bypass the starter interlock on the gear selector, so it's possible. I plan to rewire it properly.

Yes, turning the key left works great. Thank you.

Be careful with that glow plug. More than once I hit the key getting off our 430 in the woods and accidentally turned on the heater. It drains the battery pretty quickly. Dad eventually put in an external block heater - that worked much better when really cold. And don't use ether - we rebuilt ours several times due to ether damaage.

the older ones had 4 intake heaters spaced along the manifold flatpicker, because their are 4 in a row at a glance they look like glow plugs. The newer ones just had one big heater in the top of the manifold. I hooked it up once and mine still would not start without the block heater so I removed it all. our local case dealer told me that he used to take them right out because he had seen a few rattle apart and ceramic get sucked through the engine.
