Worked on the 400 again

Spent the weekend working in the 400 again. It needed to be split and the throw out bearing carrier replaced. When I put this engine in I knew this one was bad but couldn't find one. Turned out the input shaft carrier was bad too. So I replaced that as well. My grandson Jordan helped.

That tube on the new one was stuck in the carrier and I thought it was supposed to be there because it was right and wouldn't hold in the other part. But when I got the new carrier it was obvious what was wrong. So hopefully that will take care of that problem and I won't have to split this tractor again. The bolts are about worn out from taking it apart so often. Lol

Also got a power steering unit from the same place. Traded for both for some future welding on his equipment.

Got to use the trusty DC too.

I managed to pinch the oil pressure tube and the thermostat is sticking, so a little left to do yet. Sure do hope this is the last time I have to dig into this one as it's been a real money pit. But I think I've got it all worked out now.

Jon,

Did you have a donor tractor or get the power steering front end from a salvage yard? If so, do you mind telling how much it cost? I'd like to do the same swap. Don

I got these parts from a neighbor who is parting one out. He needs some welding done on a planter and traded me the parts for the welding. I'm giving him the takeoffs so he has the same scrap weight he had. He has some good parts for a 400 tho including an injection pump.

In the picture of the bearing carrier that tube is supposed to be pressed into the carrier for the throw out bearing carrier to ride on, how do you have it fixed up the carrier in your hand is how it should be installed. I have seen a couple of those work loose in the seal carrier and had to replace them.

I know that now. On The other that tube was stuck in the
carrier and slid with that. I thought that was correct til I saw
this one. It is correct now.

Thank you Jon. after rereading your original post again it made sense to me what you were saying, They are a real good tractor.
