970 ps piston seals

Hello. I am starting to re-assemble our 970 power shift trans & the service manual shows old style pistons with wires in the seals.Our pistons are new style & no info on installation of these in the book . My questions is, should I warm up the seals in warm water to expand them a bit or work them on cold? Thanks. Jim S

Carefully slip the oring on taking care not to twist it, then do the same with the square ring, it will slip on quite easily at room temp. Have installed hundreds with never a problem. Rod.

Rod is right, easy, but when they are on I always go around them with smooth round piece to form them, don't know if it is necessary or not but it works for me. Another note, I do not use any of the old style pistons, the new ones are so much superior in sealing. I suspect that the square cut pistons will be harder to get used as time goes on. Even with the expander wire the old system was less than satisfactory IMHO.
