my 430 is leaking hydraulic oil into the rear end. my manual tho not to explicit says it could be trans, seal or rock shaft return line. does that sound about rite? hope to pull the rock shaft cover tomorrow.

The oil is either leaking from the 3 pt lift cylinder or migrating past the seal on the PTO driveshaft. Could be either or both. It is a common
problem as age takes it toll. You can determine which is the culprit before disassembly by attaching a heavy implement to the 3pt and leave it
suspended overnight. If, come morning, it has settled to the ground, the seals on the lift cylinder are kaput. If the implement is still
suspended, the seal on the PTO driveshaft that runs from the clutch to the rear of the tractor is the culprit.

I have a 1961 431 that had the exact same problem. With advise from this forum I was able to fix it myself. Apparently the two common places to leak is
the PTO shaft seal and the rock shaft piston O rings. I would replace both while you have the rock shaft cover off. You need to drain the rear end and
also remove the PTO unit. The PTO seal can be removed with a slide hammer. The rock shaft piston O ring replacement is obvious once the cover is
off and flipped over.
I purchased the parts I needed from John Saeli. A forum member.

No split to change the PTO shaft seal. Just pull the Eagle hitch cover under the seat that contains the hitch rockshaft/ piston assembly. Pic is 300 but basically the same as 430. John Saeli will have the new seal (315) 585-9826.

thanks so much for the posts. I will do that, also think at same time will check out the brakes when the oil is drained.

so everything went well as far as getting the cover off etc and pto shaft out. then I discovered a big problem. the last ---- to put a seal in got carried away with a long bar or? any he damaged the area where the seal goes in making it impossible to pull out the old one.have been using a chisel to hopefully nget it to crush enough to get it out. had a good slide hammer first but would not go by the peened edges. so far it looks like two seals facing opposite directions? what a mess

Service manuals recommend the seal be staked. Note the dimples on the housing Pic1, that is the proper way to stake a seal with a center punch.

Do not use a slide hammer to remove the seal, the seal housing is pressed moderate interference fit over the end of the transmission main drive shaft. It is no fun pressing the original seal housing back in securely so it doesn't back out down the road, best to leave it as is. The seal is double lipped and wide so it has to come off a little at a time. Use a puller like Pic2, the base should be wide enough for the base to rest on seal metal with the sharp end inside, pry a little bit all the way around until it pops loose.

I have only changed the seal on early 430 1960-64 which has a bushing inside the end of transmission main drive shaft as Pic1 while the 1965 and later 430 has a needle roller bearing. Which one are you working on?

Joe

mine is like the pic. with the bushing, except for one thing. on the one in your pic they staked with a centre punch it looks like. on this one the seal is just slitely into the housing bore and a drift punch was used to peen over the edges of the housing making it impossible to remove. I am slowly trying to break it up with a chisel. it would be nice to take the housing out but as you say not advisable . thanks for the info.
