430 generator problem

I just installed a new wiring harness and idiot lights on my 430 diesel. The GEN light won't go off when the engine is running. Did I possibly wire it wrong , or do I have to repolarize the regulator, or is it simply my generator not charging? Thanks, Don

first, check you battery voltage with engine running at fast idle to find out if its charging . should have over 14 volts 14.8 max if 12 volts showing then not charging. then you know where to start.

Regulators NEVER need polarizing, but the generator may. Guys often think they are polarizing the regulator just 'cause it's often easier to jumper power and the generator at the regulator, but it's the GENERATOR that may need a shot of juice to restore some magnetism in the field polepieces..

Don, I have seen many of those gens with stuck brushes, you can check that through the back if it has the original one on it. just spray a good penetrating oil on the pivot pins for the brushes and snap the holder arms with a smakk screwdriver till they work free. IIRC there is a special procedure for polarizing that system,

I believe you are supposed to disconnect the field wire before touching a hot wire to the field terminal. If someone has an original service manual they could check that out for us, it has been years but something is rattling around in my mind about that.

One side of the indicator light circuit should go to the I terminal on the switch, the other to the Arm terminal on the regulator. When the gen is not running the generator windings act as a ground for the light, when the gen is running the voltage rises and the voltages on both sides of the bulb balances, no difference in voltage= no current flow, light goes out.

That's ok Don, electrics/ electronics and I get along well together, I have been a Ham ( amateur Radio Operator) since 1980 and hold an Extra class license, the highest class, and own the call W3MB This license is attained by passing federal exams to advance through the classed of license. I am glad to be able to share a bit with others.
