Case 730 comfort king battery cables

I went out to start my tractor tonight and I noticed my battery cables were starting to melt and the solenoid was smoking. What do I need to do?

When I have those issues, it is usually the
connections. Take all the cable connections loose
and clean out any rust/corrosion. And get rid of any
rusty lock washers (replace with new shiny ones).
But if smoke was coming from solenoid you
probably will need to replace it.

You might also have a starter issue. The brushes or
grounding might be bad causing it to pull too many
amps while cranking.

You didn?t say if gas or diesel? How long you were
cranking? How cold? All these make a difference.

Low voltage at the solenoid will cause the disc inside to weld to the connector lugs. Either a new solenoid or take apart and clean the lugs and connector disc. Need good voltage to the solenoid to make it work correctly.

To each his own but I personally never use lock washers on battery/ starter connections, the first time they heat they lose their spring tension and things get loose again, I clean up bright and clean and use new flats.

Interesting you say that. Some I do because they
come in the package with the new solenoid or
switch and I figure the engineers ?should? know
what they are doing. But I like using the star or
pointy lock washers. They seem to dig in better and
don?t lose the spring tension like regular lock
washers. But I know what you?re saying about the
lock washers.

It is a diesel and I wasn t cranking on it too long, it was maybe 50 in the shop.
