Clutch adjustment on a LA

I've got a 1942 LA that I'm working on. I'm trying to get the clutch adjusted. Because right now it's not wanting to stay engaged. Or am I missing something and it have nothing to do with adjustment at all? Also in my shop manual I calls for a special tool to adjust the clutch is this correct?
 
Just make the tool from a 5/16" rod....flatten one end and grind a notch in it. Get behind the pin and pull it out as you spin the collar one notch. Check the clutch and try again if not tight enough.

Done that a few times on LA's.
I have used a big screwdriver instead of making a tool.

So guess my next question is since the clutch will not stay engaged do I need to loosen it or tighten it up?? When I look through the inspection cover in the bell housing There's very little movement in the through out bearing.
 
There are a couple things you may be looking at besides adjustment: Pressure plate spring may be broken or slipped off, adjusting pin spring may be weak-or broken allowing the adjusting ring to loosen, a pin may be missing from the over centering assembly. I have seen all three possibilities. Good Luck! Don
 
I just checked the Caseih online parts and as I suspected that uses the old style clutch unlike the newer hand clutch DCs, My 39 DC originally used the same style clutch, the hub has fingers on it that ride up a cone to give the pressure plate movement, the cone is fastened to the brass throw out yoke, remove the side pan and have someone work the clutch lever, if the fingers will not slide up the cone shaped piece it is to tight, if it goes clear up and don't snap in the clutch is to loose, either way the procedure for adjusting is the same, pull the pin rearward and turn the hub and finger assembly RH to tighten, LH to loosen. Those clutches are a lot less common and entirely different in design. I do not know who made them but they were also used in stationary power units other than Case.

and I believe that it must have been tightened up as tight
as it could be. But it's working fine now!!!!
