Hello. I have taken the power shift out due to intermittent hard engagement with the inching pedal . I have been checking items that you guys suggested from my previous post as I go. The torque limiter has come apart so it is not a bad time to find that. My question today is the end play on the sliding gear shaft. It
seem excessive & when I took the gear off, there are 8 shims behind the clamp plate. The service manual does not mention any shims but the parts book lists 2 sizes. Could anyone tell me how much endplay this shaft should have ? Thanks. Jim S

Early tractors did not have shims and were subject to the three bolts breaking off, A PIP was introduced that added these shims to in effect build the shaft end out so the bolts were clamping straight, not loading the bolt heads from the plate bowing in as the bolts were tightened to torque, later cap
screws were treated with a locking substance on the threads. there should be about .002 between the plate and the gear face just enough to make sure the plate is pulling back squarely.
