990 steering slop

Lot of slop in the steering. How complicated it it to fix? Are all the needed parts available? Will new balls fix it or are there other parts that wear out? I have complete shop manuals for the tractor.

What model 990 do you have? Full hydrostatic or the power assist semi-manual set up? There may even have been a pure manual system early on, I'm not sure.

It has a belt driven power steering pump.

Belt driven pump don't mean nothing. If power assist, not all parts available. If hydrostatic, yes parts are available. Need more info as to where the slop is.

I don't think any 990s were factory built with a belt drive power steering system.

Early ones have a gear drive above the injector pump, late ones had a gear drive in front of the starter.

A picture of the system and more info will help diagnosing it.

Changeing the balls isn't going to do much. The balls are the most durable of the parts. The wear is in the other parts. Last I knew, aftermarket steering shaft assemblies were available for the 990.

Like RG said, I've never seen a 990 with a belt driven PS system. You absolutely sure it's a David Brown 990?

The pump is on the "driver's" left side of the engine, I just guessed it was belt drive, it isn't.

Sitting in the seat, it's on the left?!! I think you might want to post a pic because that doesn't sound right. I think the only thing on the left should be fuel filters and the injector pump.

I got the steering gear from this site. It is missing a keyway for the tabbed washer that is between the top 2 nuts. The keyway for the woodruff key for the steering wheel was too narrow, had to file the old key down to make it fit. The "nut" with the balls is very stiff, like the tractor doesn't have power steering. Looks to me like the tooling is worn out where they make it.
