What is the flex pipe coming off the oil filler neck? I could not find it on any manual or from the case parts online site. I noticed that it is not on other 430s . Mines a 1963 sn 8221657. She is burning oil probably piston rings and it looks like the cylinder head gasket is leaking. I?m wondering if maybe oil is getting into the air circulation as well?

The purpose of the mesh in the filler cap is to screen the oil vapor droplets out of the blowby and drop it back into the top deck under the valve cover. It appears that the oil content in the blowby was excessive, passing through the mesh and smearing down the side of the head, block, and smoking on the exhaust manifold. The jury rig hose is apparently to direct the oil away for the exhaust manifold.

Seems to be someone's idea of an pollution control device, similar to what cars started having about 1963 instead of the open road tube.

So the oil would go into the oil bath air filter? It does not look like a great idea to me but I?m still trying to figure this out. I thought the air cleaner was on its own.

That's good Mark, I completely missed that hose tapped into the air intake pipe.

Case 441, the oil laden blowby is going into the throat of the carb and will enter the cylinders via the intake valves along with the air/fuel combustion mixture and hopefully burn w/o producing a lot of blue smoke out the exhaust.

The air intake is under a vacuum typically 21" hg at idle and varies with load. You have oil in suspension due to the motion of the running gear under the valve cover some of which will be drawn through that tube into the air intake due to the high vacuum. No surprise your oil consumption is high.

The jury rig was probably installed due to excessive ring/sleeve wear that elevated the crankcase pressure to get around the oil mess in the vicinity of the breather cap.

Thanks for the reply, I checked the plugs and one was completely coated in burnt oil. So it sounds like it?s been needing a seal replacement for atleast 10 years now that?s when it was last rebuilt . I?ve had the tractor for about a year just finally learned enough to figure out how things are supposed to work.
