Case 930 diesel pros - cons

I am looking at a 930 diesel at an up coming auction and it looks in rough shape comesticly but seems to run good from what I am told. I have never owned a Case and my question is ...is this a good tractor to buy in a auction if the price is right, or something to stay away from no matter the price? Are there any inherently bad problems with these tractors that would keep you from buying it? Are parts and gaskets still available from the Case dealer?

These are a tough old tractor. Is the 930 you are looking at like this one

This is my 930 comfort king. Has a 8 speed transmission, and a 12 gallon per minute hydraulic pump, so it is still a very useful tractor on my farm. Three points that some consider to be draw backs to these tractors are the brakes are manual and do require a bit of maintenance. The steering is a power assist style, and again will work fine if maintained. The transmission is not synchronized, so no shifting up or down on the go.. These tractors are easy on fuel and very comfortable to ride, given the location of the seat, also great visibility. The low compression/pre combustion chamber designed of the engine can make these tractors harder to start when weather gets cold, but nothing a in-line coolant heater won?t cure. One thing to remember, this is at least a 52 year old tractor, and how well it works today is a direct result of how it has been maintained over the last half century. Generally a tractor any good machine can work on. I really like mine, wish I could have gotten one 40 years ago when I started farming. But all I could afford back then was a Case 430, it was excellent too, just kinda small

In my opinion the best tractor Case ever produced. Lots of power and low end torque, very simple to work on, operators platform is up out of dust and dirt with great 360 vision, and good selection of gearing for jobs at hand.----------------------Loren

The 930 is one of the best Case tractors built. Tough and dependable. Easy to work on. Excellent lugging ability. Very good on fuel. Very good visibility. I can only think of two drawbacks. Brakes take a lot of pressure to stop a heavy load and if you're out plowing and it's in the lower 30s and don't have a cab which, I didn't, you're sitting up there out in the open. It gets a wee bit chilly.

They were built with 540 or 1000 rpm pto it was one or the other. I know of one down the road that's 1000 rpm pto. Wasn't much use for what pto equiptment they have.

If it's useable, you can not go wrong,
Loren,I always love your plow pictures, maybe if it gets stiff here maybe, maybe I can do s little of that myself

I've had my 8 speed for three years. I've been very happy with it. It's main duty is snow blower in the winter. Mine was in rough shape mechanically but after overhauling the transmission it's been great since. Put a block heater on it and plug it in for two hours and it starts pretty easy.

One thing on the 8 speed not mentioned is do not leave the transmission in the S (start) position when doing stationary (PTO) work because the range gears do not lubricate properly and can seize up effectively locking up the transmission.

Many pros, a few cons. Keep the radiator clean and full of coolant, the heads don't like overheating. Also, keep the differential full of oil so the reverser gear and shaft has proper lubrication. Otherwise, a tough, well built machine that with decent maintenance will last forever. Don

Great diesel engines!!! Six speed transmission 1959-1964? Eight speed Comfort King 1964-1969 have a real 3 point hitch (category 2 only?). Simple efficient design, reliable and easy to maintain. IMHO the power assist steering, heavy clutch, heavy brakes and hydraulics (1500 PSI?) are weak points compared to other 1960s tractors. Good open field tillage tractors, not my choice for a loader tractor. Narrow front end is quit maneuverable, wide front much less so. Price range $2500 to $3500 for Comfort King depending on condition.

Drive one before you bid. Maybe drive a 970 or 1070 too, the engines are similar, but the 70s are a quantum leap above the 30s in features and comfort.

My experience with any tractor is to avoid tractors who have been traded several times. If you can find one and look over the farm where it came from. If the farm is neat and everything is in good repair, and they have had that tractor a long time, chances are on your side you will get a good tractor.

hyd psi was 1850-1900 on the 8 speeds a bit less on the 6 speeds,, 17 gpm,, on 8 speeds and was as much or more than any other brand made then, we sold a lot of loaders in those days to all brands,, Case had a faster cycle time than any of them,, 1030 psi went to 2050 psi,, with same gpm, I have my 830's set at 2000 psi to run hydro swing hyds like they should,, most people complain about them when the system has not been kept in condition to supply spec'ed psi

(quoted from post at 01:41:56 01/14/20) Long as its an 8 speed you should be good to go. The 6 speed chain drives are not as user friendly.

The tractor I am looking at is a 6 speed, When you say chain drive , can explain what that is?
