188d flywheel

as I looked for the inspection hole on my 580ck with 188d, it was located on the right side behind the starter on the torque converter housing.. When I looked in the hole, I noticed the only marks I could see is the letters DC, there was a #10 with about 8 lines before and after this mark. Is there any additional insight to find more flywheel markings or a way to clean the site without removing the flywheel?

if u are on the right side looking in the hole the first set u see when rotating the way the engine runs is BTDC, the proper timing would be 8 degrees before you get to TDC, there are 10 marks ATDC and there are at least 30 before TDC. At any rate if you get TDC in the hole, then back the engine up till you are about 20 BTDC then come back to 8 then proceed with your timing, the reason for that is to get the gear slack out. If you have the flywheel clean you should see that every 5 degrees is a longer line in any case , each line is one degree. If you are removing the pump. make sure both lines are in the small timing window, if there is only one turn the engine another complete turn.

thanks for your reply Mel, how do I clean the flywheel . When I moved the fly wheel, is it considered clockwise if I am by the inspection hole pulling the f/wheel toward me ? or do I need to push the fan way toward the drivers side? Never done this before,

Clockwise as viewed from the fan, the timing marks will be moving up toward TDC as viewed in the timing hole, the short set of marks are after TDC. Brake and parts cleaner and a blowgun if you are so equipped will clean it up well enough.

mEL, thanks again...I'll give it a try and see if I can grasp all this info...new at this and don't truly understand the fundamentals of all the stroke cycles and when each / which valve moves. thanks Jerry

It just takes time and patience, none on here learned it all overnite, if you are using valve movement to find TDC as a newbie then you really could get confused. For your purposes if the injection pump is turning Just use the info I gave you to get to 8 degrees BTDC and check the pump for two lines lining up, as I stated before if there is only one mark, turn the engine a complete revolution and try again. If this was a running engine you will be fine, if not running because of a broken shaft or sheared key in the drive gear that's a whole different issue. Don't be concerned about asking questions, this subject comes up regularly on here.
