430 steering wheel removal

Does anybody have any tips or tricks for removing a 50 year old steering wheel from a 430? I need to fix the throttle linkage and it must come off. It's still in decent shape, so I'd like to save it-if possible. Thanks, Don

The Down and dirty on that Don, is a grinder. Cut away all three legs. Then cut from the 3 o?clock position in lite cuts ,Until you just about reach the steering shaft spline. Split with a chisel in the groove. If unsuccessful at that point grind just a little deeper. CM Feel free to call me if you needFurther guidance

Don, Besides CM aproach I had luck once by using a small popane torches and heated the hub and used bees wax when cooled and then it cam off.Good luck.

I've pulled several of these 1959 & later steering wheels. The shaft & steering wheel hub is spline fit. Nut is 3/4" x 10 tpi.

The first few I used a plastic felling wedge with the center cut to pass the width of the shaft. The wedge has to be blocked up to clear the cluster gauge board on the x00B series. PB Blaster penetrate soak in the hub. Full thread in nut on shaft, tap shaft nut and tap wedge. Takes awhile on some but it will come off w/o damage.

I like the heat with bees wax that chcase mentioned but didn't try it due to the plastic. That's an old time tried and true method.

I now have a huge 2 prong puller that fits around and catches under the hub with the jack screw on the top end of the shaft.

I really cannot help you....

I do not know how to do it and keep the steering wheel together. All 3 spokes of our original steering wheel had broken off after having been welded back to the hub previously. It was time for replacement anyway. I used a gear puller. First pulled the rubber off then finally was able grip down to the metal of the hub and got it off. It was really stuck though.

I put antisieze on with the new steering wheel and it worked at least for a couple years, because just this fall a freak accident happened and I had to replace the steering wheel again and I do not remember having any issue at all getting it off...again only after 2 years this time.

I have heard of success using and air chipper with a dull bit or a pointed bit (and drill a center hole to keep it in the middle) on the steering shaft while having someone pull up on the steering wheel.
