Im still working on this case 580ck with the 188d in it. Its a 1970 based off the serial number. I changed the fuel filters and bleed them and bleed the lines that go into the injectors. I can get it to start for not quite a minute then it quits like the shutoff was pulled. Do I need to bleed the return lines? Ive got some fuel leaks to fix yet but could these cause this to not start? Any other ideas? Ive got plenty of fuel in the and through the filters.

A little background I got this not running with the story that it runs but the guy I got it from was able to get it start the last time he tried.
 
Injection pump MIGHT need removed for repair. First make sure there's good gravity flow to the pump inlet. To confirm it's injection pump trouble loosen the two screw timing cover on the pump side, if engine does not die WITH the fuel leaking from the cover, but shuts off with the cover screws tight, pump needs removed for repair. If not repaired soon, and the retainer pins get sheared off inside pump WON'T be worth repairing when the hydraulic head is seized and drive shaft broken..
 

I tried loosening that cover and it didn t seem to make a difference. However I cracked open a few of the fittings on the return lines and it actually fired up and stayed running this time. It ran good and it accelerated and decelerated fine and idled good. I didn t run it real long as it s still leaking fuel out of the top cover and a few of the banjo fittings on the pump I m gonna order a seal kit today
 
I have a 530D with the 188D, I replaced filters, blew out lines, etc.
It would not start after all that work ,even bled it as far as I could , could not get injector fittings loose ,
So I applied a vaccumn cleaner hose to fuel tank filler for short time , hit key and it started like it always did .
