1949 Case VAC

Got my first tractor and excited to have it running. My Great Grandfather and GG Grandfather bought this in 1951 and ran it on his little 15 acres of fields until 200__ until his health wouldn t let him. It was well loved but well used. He did us a favor by drawing the gas when he parked it.
Cleaned the tank, carb, rewired what the rats had chewed, rebuilt the starter, replaced distributor cap, and she fired right up!
Drove it around the field and everything still works.
Both rear axle seal are leaking and the lift cylinder is leaking pretty bad. Going to start replacing seals and get all the worn linkages tightened and fab d before I start making it pretty again. This is my first time breaking into a tractor. Any tips, advice, etc will be appreciated. I am going to order a service and parts manual first. Recommendations?
The guys on the main page were great help at narrowing down the model and year.
I also have a bottom plow that appears to be around the same vintage. I am going to have to dig around and see if I can find any of other implements he had for it. I remember as a kid seeing a side sickle mower but he also had another slightly larger tractor at that time. Not sure which it was on.

Serial VC5360012

Looks like a VAC, I have a tough time with serial nr VC5360012. I did't think VC were built that late, maybe the stamper had a hangover and forgot the "A". VT328 is the block casting nr for a Case built engine.

Doesn't look like the Stockton hitch that predated the Eagle hitch but looks kind of familiar for some reason?

The link below is an operators manual for pre Eagle hitch VA tractors, sometime prior early/mid 1949 although I would bet not every VA tractor built in later 1949 had to have an Eagle hitch say if a Farmer already had a preferred hitch that worked off the belt pulley high pressure pump & cylinder hydraulic system maybe Case might accommodate?

Also check the operators manual pics up against your tractor, PTO is the old style that was changed sometime in 1949 or 1950?

Thanks Joe. I know I took a picture of the serial plate and then typed the number in my docs for reference. When I started posting I must have deleted or not saved the image. 🤷‍♂️ I fairly certain that?s what it was but.....
-Any recommend service and parts manual brands?
Preferably one with some good breakdowns of systems before I start breaking it down to replace seals.
-Is there a term used for that hitch system? I keep seeing pre - Eagle Hitch but..... Not much of a farmer or tractor aficionado here.

when EH came in 1949 production it was std on the VAC but optional on all other models,, I never thought about a 49 or later VA for example if it would have the non EH pto style or not,, but it would be a good bet they would have them up if they could,, every EH I have or seen has the pto with the rod with loop,, would have been a pain with a top link to use the rope engage style, I have seen at least one VAC that was ordered EH Delete though

How about checking your model/serial nr tag again and see if we can get passed the lack of "A" heartburn.

I don't have and manuals other than issued by Case. I understand the Jensales manuals are a direct copy of the original Case manual and the I&T manuals are pretty much useless. Can't prove either general impression by me.

Both these links are 1953 manuals, they may not have 100% of tractor's info but I don't know of any older service or parts manuals. I think either one on these manuals, along with the previously posted operators manual, will take care of anything that you will need to know.

The first link is a service manual provided by Mike Johnson, use the drop down menu. I don't know where mj is now, haven't seen a post from him here lately. 2nd manual is an on-line VA parts manual. You can also look up parts on the CaseIH parts site.

You were exactly right. My mistake. It is stamped VAC. Not sure I would have caught it without you saying that though.

Looks like the"V" is probably hidden
under the screw that holds the plate to
the dash. Definitely a VAC by the
picture. I have A '46 VAC that Mom's
cousin was able to purchase under
"veterans preferance" when he came back
from being a tail gunner in a B-17 during
WWII. Kind of neet to have a tractor
with that type of connection. jal-SD

I was seeing the painted side of the A as the right side of the V. Sure is great to have it. He came home from the Pacific in the Navy after WWII and decided he was not leaving his family anymore. This tractor fed and provided the food and income along with a few animals for his family from then on.

Joe, again you do such a good job of documenting, and providing information. If I see you post, I take the time to read your posts. Thank you again for all you do here. Dan
