DC Case parts

I have been looking for pistons and sleeves for my 1948 DC Case tractor now for several years with no luck. I have also entertained the idea of using a compatible substitute from a different tractor or brand but cannot get any reliable information on what might work. If anyone has any ideas it would be greatly appreciated.

In the past, I dealt with rebuilding about a half dozen D Series Case tractors. One seems to learn the hard way about a few things. LOL

1. What is the problem(s) you need to solve?---Smoking? Blow-by? Rust/pits ? Other?
2. How many hours do the repairs need to last? One hundred? Two hundred? An actual hundred hours a year is a loooonnnnng time to drive those old tractors!!!! LOL
3. What bore and material is the current pistons?
4. Is there a lip at the top of the current sleeves deep enough to catch a finger nail on? Maybe all you need is new rings.

Rules rule of thumb I learned included--
1. Pull the head and learn what is there now. At 72 years of age, your DC might already have big Aluminum piston replacements. Five of the six junkers I started with had big bore Al pistons. Two had 4-1/16 bore !!!! Try to find those today!!! LOL
2. Not to pull the old sleeves and disturb the big o-ring at the bottom of the sleeves unless there was good reasons. Your 72 year old engine?s grooves in the block for these o-rings are probably pitted, hard to clean, and will need a coating of ?permatrex? to prevent the new o-rings from leaking.
3. Shine a light thru the lower cooling port and get an idea if the OD of the sleeves is pitted. With the water pump off, it is easy to examine part of the OD of the front sleeve for pits and rust flakes.

For me, if the groove at the top of the sleeve was ?shallow?, I considered the sleeve to not be worn much. An inexpensive berry hone did a good job taking the glaze off the sleeve walls.

I have not checked in many years but Hastings had antique tractor piston rings available to order online?any quantity. The width and thickness of rings tended to be standard so tractor factories went with the standard thicknesses and widths for cost savings and availability.

I found 4-1/16 bore rings from Hastings that I think was used on the Massey Harris 44. Correct widths and thickness?s.

My one DC with standard 3-7/8 bore cast iron pistons vibrated worse that the Al pistons in the other tractors.

Happy New Year.
