1958 CASE400 diesel where to add/check fluid levels?

A photograph or diagram showing where to check the levels of each and every fluid would be very helpful to me about now. Where each filler opening is would also be much appreciated. Any ideas where I might find one ? Does such a diagram or photo exist anywhere ?

I have figured out a few but not sure about the transmission and final drive. Do they use the same filler opening ?

I think I figured out the PTO level is the smaller plug below halfway down on the right side at the rear of the PTO housing. Can anyone verify that ?

I do agree you should buy a manual lots of Great info you will need in one this should get you trhpough this issue though

Yes I did but it covers several other model CASE tractors as well as the 400. I was hoping it would have more info on the 400.

Where do I get the manual that has the photographs and text shown above ? Those look like what I have.

My mistake this is a 1956 large frame Racine built 400 model. Not a 1958 as the title of this thread erroneously says.

That didn't come out right. I believe I have the same fill openings, drain plugs and level checking plugs as what shows in those photographs. Yes, I agree I need to get a better manual.

No problem, Go to a local cih dealer and give them this order number and they can order you the correct ops manual, if you have a gas engine, they will have to look up the # for the dsl version, or if they cant post back and I can look that one up also, as I do have the book to give me the correct ordering #'s for all Case AG equipment

ok, Thanks. The closest dealer to me is 70 mles away. I give them a call and see what they can do for me.

Case Nutty,

I emailed the closest CASE/IH dealer asking about manuals and giving them your part number as shown on the front cover, 9-261 and got no response.

I did some looking online for that number and discovered it is for the later 400s. Mine is an early one built before the serial number that 9-261 covers which is after s/n 8104710. My serial number starts with 808.

I found and got a used original parts manual for the correct version. At considerable savings over a new catalog. Still looking for info on the operator manual and service manual.

If you can supply me with the correct publication/part numbers for those, I'd certainly appreciate it.

Sounds like you got the I&T manual, not the operators manual.

Sounds like you have a iffy dealer,, these are all available from any cih dealer if they will bother to call and order them,, these are both the same page,, just different angles of it, the far right is the order #

Thanks again Case Nutty,

I'll try calling the same dealer with the order numbers I need and see if I can get anyone to help. If not there are a couple of other dealers a little further away, I'll try. Beyond that at least I have the correct numbers now to look for used originals, if I need to.

I'll let you know how I do.

If they wont help call Saeli Imp they can get them and will ship, lot of so called dealers these days do not want to do it unless they can punch it into a computer,, so they just say NLA,, the dealers who were red before they went bankrupt and were bought for pennies on the dollar act like red is the only thing,, sadly most at cih feel the same way,, i have little use for the cih side any more,,

I ended up getting a factory reprinted manual on eBay. It's a used copy of the IH CASE manual pictured in a previous post.

Prior to that, I also (from eBay) got an unbranded, a brand new reprint that was missing a number of pages. Got refunded for it right away but the seller has not sent me a return shipping label as yet ?!?!

It always surprises me how many twists a story like this can take. Thanks for the help everyone ... especially CASE Nutty.

Next, it looks like I might have to rebuild the PTO clutch. It grabs well enough for what I'm doing but creeps a LOT with the release lever adjusted to give the best grab. I was hoping that it just needed to be topped up with ATF but that didn't help.

Symptoms look like it may have some broken spacer springs or really messed up/warped clutch discs/plates. Reminds me of my motorcycle clutch that had been badly overheated.

I'll probably dig into it sometime this coming spring. Thanks again forum.
