The original subject was "Re: DC Radiator removal".

Don, I am needing advice on removing a Case DC radiator. Am I guessing correctly that the front casting with the name CASE embossed in it must come off before trying to lift radiator off of tractor? The two lower 5/16ths bolts that hold that casting in place don't want to budge. Any suggestions on how to get them out without twisting them off?
Thanks for your help!! Don W.

While you are waiting for Don?s response, take some penetrating oil and soak the bolts, allowing them to take that oil in .several applications will be necessary.CM

CM, thanks for your reply! I have begun soaking them with penetrating oil. I don't think these have ever been removed since the tractor was built. The head of the bolts are somewhat deteriorated. I will be patient with them, and continue to soak them! Thanks! Don W

It's easiest to remove it as a unit, but it is heavy. There are 2-1/2" bolts that go up through the front casting and into the radiator lower casting to take out and you need to remove the cast elbo under the tank. There are also 4 bolts that hold the lower tin on that need to come out so it will get past the fan. Then it will lift out. I did mine this winter to put in a new water pump. Be careful because it is HEAVY! I can do it, but just barely. A lift of some kind would make it easy.

the absolutely best penetrant out here is a 50/50 mixture of acetone and ATF, try it, you will be amazed.... Larry

Thanks for your reply! So I am clear, the front grill casting can stay on the front of the radiator? I need to change the water pump as well on this one. Also, I need to replace the felt oil seal on front of the crankshaft. I noted everything else you wrote as well !! I do not have any kind of lifting device. I will definitely get help when the time comes to lift it out. Thanks so much for your help!!

Don W,

It doesn't necessarily need to come off, but it does make it easier, especially on a DC3 gooseneck. Are you talking about the two bottom bolts with screw heads? Chuck is right, try a good penetrant first, if that doesn't work then it requires heat. It usually doesn't take much heat to break them loose. If they are the original screw heads have a good, big screwdriver with a square shank ready. You can put a vise grip on the square shank for more turning power. Good Luck! Don

(quoted from post at 04:07:07 08/17/19) I was on the New Jersey from 82-85 3rd division.

Thanks.

I just wandered, my brother was on there parts of 68 - 69 for the Vietnam deployment. He was a snipe.

I was elected to make up his Bio when he passed a couple years ago and could not find his name on the NJ site crew list.

Thanks to everyone for their replys! I can see this is going to be a job, but it needs to be done! Don W

Update on Case DC radiator removal. Thanks to the suggestion of using a 50/50 mix of acetone and ATF, I was able to get the two bottom bolts to loosen, and then out without breaking them. Very happy about that! I continued, and got the radiator out and also the water pump. This tractor still had the shutters on it, and I was able to free them up as well so they work. I was surprised about that. Now, I understood from an earlier reply, that I need to remove the front bolster in order to get a puller on the pulley on the crankshaft in order to get it off so I can replace the felt seal!! And that seal definitely needs replacing, as I scraped built up dirt/oil off everything in the front end. I am including pictures for clarification on the bolts I need to take out to get the bolster off the front. Again, thanks for everyone's replys.....They all helped in my getting this far with the job! Don W.

Looks like a big job to take off the bolster. Can't you attach a slide hammer in some way to the pulley?

Joe

Joe ! I am certainly open to try it. There isn't much room in front of the pulley because of the starting hand crank apparatus though!

I am down to replacing the felt seal on the crankshaft for this Case DC. I have the outer retainer, but according to the parts book, there should be an inner oil thrower?! And I don't see it, unless it's part of the front timing gear cover? I hope someone can advise me on this. Thanks! Don W

Don, I have the front end all apart and cleaned up now. I am ready to replace the felt seal for the crankshaft, but I fear I am missing the oil thrower that goes on before the felt seal?? All I removed was the outer retainer and the old seal itself. I don't see anything else in the cover, unless I am missing it?? Thanks for your help! Don W.
