I currently have a 1954 case 400 diesel and went to look at possibly purchase a early 830 with the eagle claw hitch. The 2 tractors look very similar overall the only things that are visually different is the sheet metal, injector pump and the 830 has 2 gear shifters. My question is would this 830 have any advantages over the 400 I currently have? The only reason I would be interested in it if it would handle the 5 shank high clearance Mohawk chiesl plow that I have.

How deep?clay loam soil?
Many factors but even a 930 will strugggle with 5 shanks deep in ground where they need to be to do a good job.
Why not take each outside shank off and see if the 400 can pull it deep?
Im thinking 20 horsepower per shank

The 830 will have more hp by a fair margin. I'm not sure if you have the super diesel in the 400 or not, but in either case the 830 will have more. Otherwise not a lot of difference. How close are you to pulling it with the 400? Does the 830 have com? That would help as well.

Pa bought a brand new Mohawk chisel plow back in the 70s. Book said 12 hp. per shank with straight shovels-15 hp. per shank with twisted shovels.

Get the 830 ,,. It will be a HOSS compared to the 400. we pulled our Mohawk chisel plow with a turned up 800.. After 2 years of Upland Clay it was DAWG tired and had cracked heads .so we overhauled it and at Pops Demand turned the Pump back down ,, It was a nice tractor for us to trade for a new 1290, .
