What you find at salvage yard

Needed a carb for my combine so I went to my local salvage yard. They have a whole shed full of brand new parts and I knew they had a shelf of carbs, so I thought I would check to see if they had one. I looked for them online and could only find one used one on eBay and it was crazy expensive. You can buy new ones online for 318 Chrysler engines, but the throttle works the other way so they won't work. But right there on the shelf were a bunch of brand new exact replacements. I didn't dig through the whole pile, but I would guess there are 8-10 more there. Sure is nice to have a place like that around.

Jon: How is it that they had so many Carbs for a CASE Combine w/ the 318? They were Strombergs, were made in Elmira NY by (I think) Eclipse Machine??)

They have an entire building full of new parts of all kinds they got from buying out all the dealers that closed in the 80s. Then they went to the distribution centers in Minneapolis and dumpster dived for parts that were thrown out, they got those for scrap price by the pound. The building is I would guess 60x150 with 16' wall and all shelves floor to ceiling, all new parts of every discription. New price on those parts today would be in the billions of dollars. I needed cylinder drive sprockets for my combine a couple years ago, went to the gear shelf and found the three I was missing sitting right there. When I was looking for planter parts this spring I saw what looks like 4 complete seed plate units, the part the plates fit in, in the shelf for the k160 units. I'm sure there are sieves in there for my combine, but I haven't measured them yet to be sure. I saw the steering tie rod I need today when I was there. The most popular are JD, IH and Massey. There are shelves full of transmission shafts and gears and rear end parts. They have another larger shed for used parts and an old barn full of plow, disc, hydraulic cylinders and valves and dual wheel clamps and such. That doesn't count what is close to 200 acres of outside stuff like tractors and combines. That is where each brand of combine has its own pile of new sheet metal parts like augers, shields, walkers and such. Those piles are as high as you can throw them and the size of a large house. If you need a new unloading auger for a 7700, 915 or 750, or most any other old combine they will have it. I got both, clean and return elevator chains brand new for my 77 pull type out of the hay mow in the barn a few years ago.

Those are Stromberg? Looks exactly like the old Carter YF. Terrible problems with those warping, both the bowl and the cover. Did the Stromberg have the same problem?

Jon, do you have to pick your self or can you call and get some one to hunt what you need down and send it??? gobble

You mostly have to get it yourself. Depending on what you want they sometimes will pull it for you. Again depending on what you want, I would go get it for you too.

That's very gracious of you. I think it could be a fun road trip. I just need to think hard of all parts and pieces I'm needing. Thanks Jon, blessings to your kingdom. gobble
