Hi All

I inherated some generic 10w-40 synthetic oil. Would this be sutible to run in the 770 diesel? I do not run the tractor below 32 degrees.

Thanks Dave

When I went to voc tech in the late 60,s my instructor said the same thing about quaker state. That's the only comment he ever made about oil brands.

You Need HD Dsl engine oil for that engine, not rotella which is a truck engine oil and yes there is a differance, not gas engine oil HD dsl engine oil, the weight rating does not bother me,, but I am guessing you are talking about a non HD dsl oil, so unless it says right on it for use in off-roadd/HD dsl engines on it no I would not recommend it at all

Well then, since I am out of oil at this point what you recommend? Something reasonable, I change every year regardless and only put about 50- hours on it.

Thanks Dave

Dave , do not buy something reasonable, as Tom said buy the correct oil and not worry about it. I have a 770 diesel and it gets less than 100 hours a year. I have case oil and I have cenpeco just for off road. Oil is cheap and engines are not. Jerry from Ohio

myslef I run the HD 15-40 wt dsl oil from CNH, there would be other oils with the same rating,, you could check witha local bulk oil dealer ,, or just a 30wt HD dsl oil would work where you do not use it in the cold,,

John, you are correct but I stand my ground on oils, rotella to me is not even a good chain lubing oil,, hate the stuff from what I have seen it do, others who feel different can run what ever they want its their money,, I know I should have stayed out of it to save a whole pile of rebuttal to deal with,, I have never wavered from saying this and never will if others cant tell the difference in the two oils no way will I ever change their minds with my words

Why is Rotella not a good oil? I'm not disagreeing with you, just wondering. I used it once in my truck and never will again as I had valve lifter ticking with it.

For me its based on quality, it runs like water compared to the oil I use, once I had a dealership change the oil on my Dodge with a Case/Cummings engine, that one had both a stock and a mechanical oil gauge, right off I seen the oil pressure was 15 lbs lower, drove home 90 miles stepped out and smelled oil, looked under it to see oil dripping out the breather tube, called the place who changed it and asked what oil they put in, fired it back up drove it in my shop dropped it and the filter and replaced with my oil never again did it drip out the breather tube and my oil pressure went back to norm,,, had some left over in a barrel my Dad had bought so i tried once to use it up by lubing chains with it, it would stay on maybe 5 min,, I had been using the HD engine oil I use before and it was good for at least two hours on, I can feel the major diff in the two just by rubbing it between my fingers,, it may be just fine in a truck engine as they only use 40 to 50% crank loads,, tractor use up to 100% crank loads there are different additives for each crank load as well as oilspecs, oil is not all the same when it comes out of the ground, I guess being around the oil fields here all my life I may have better insight to things,, I will not even go into the cranks I have seen damaged by running it,, was the engines still running Yep they were but the bearing damage and blueing of the cranks tells me the real facts,, again if you use it and like it thats all good with me,, its not my equipment to have a say, I have to run what I feel is the best for me and my bottom line, the correct oil, grease and filters are Cheap,, parts and repairs, downtime is not cheap,, again this is my opinion from what I see, I do look a lot harder at many things than most do, I guess that comes from being a dealer, service/repair, owner and operator for over 50 years and yes I do things many feel is unnecessary, hope I answered your question,,

Looked at the jugs for Cenex TMS 15/40, Rotella 15/40 and Castrol 15/40. They all pass the same specs set by Cummins, Cat, Volvo, Duetz and JD. I change all the engine's oil here myself and would notice thinner than normal oil. Maybe the grease monkey that changed yours grabbed the wrong oil. Never had a oil related problem except for the Quaker State in the 70s. Use Rotella in both my Cummins powered pickups too.

They DO NOT meet the specs,, read how its worded its not the same oil specs at all if you like it use I dont care but its not the same those labels are very miss leading, as to the thinner I am talking about when warm,, again if you cant tell the diff so be it,, I sure as heck can

All three oils here have the same specs. Yes, I can read off a jug also. If Rotella was as bad as you say it would have been off the market long ago. Nephew worked in the local truck shop and Rotella and Mobil Delvac were your only choices when changing oil in trucks. The oil pressure my Cummins trucks carry is what the manual says.

Everybody has different thoughts on oil. I trucked and farmed for almost thirty years and used Rotella 15/40 in my trucks. The N-14 in the last truck went 1.4 million miles before I overhauled it. Went west a lot and pulled the guts out of the engine climbing all the mountain passes...no problem with the engine or oil. Use Co-op 15/40 in most of the Case diesels here but the one 4wd tractor has only had Rotella. No problems. Only oil I had trouble with was Quaker State back in the 70s...bearings would get worm like tracks because of high acid content in the oil.

I remember the CASE Techs, back here in the East, for many years, saying to stay away from Quaker State or Pennzoil. "Boys, you guys are more loyal to your oils than you are your wives, but there are 2 oils we DO NOT WANT YOU USING in our engines, Quaker State & Pennzoil!!"

Pennzoil, Quaker State, and Castrol come from parafin-based crude in the east. Texas/OK oils are high graphite content based. The latter are better in older diesel applications I'm familiar with. My best looking oil going in and out has been Mobil Delvac. Rotella is just corn oil or a vegetable mix to my eye. Some folks like it alot, but I don't think much of it other than in lawnmower. I cleaned 20 - 30 engine blocks a year in a hot tank with aluminum cleaner but my neighboring auto business burned the blocks to clean them. He said the ones that run their whole life on Penz or Castrol burned for days.
