Installing DV carburetor #128561;#129324;#129324;#129324;

Working on the DV I just got. No spark but I had another good case mag. Rebuilt the carburetor and now I?m trying to get it back on. I have a D and DC4, but I forgot how hard it is to get the bolts back into the air cleaner housing. I wish the case engineers would have had to install one out in the field 🥴

I wonder if anyone has had luck securing the carburetor first to the oil bath air cleaner and installing it as a unit to the manifold?

Seems like I did that once on my DC and it worked.

Do you know any old Volkswagen mechanics? If so they will have an S-shaped 13-14mm box wrench that should do the trick perfectly, in fact it was made for VW carbs.

Hello Dick, try loosening the air box and a very thin gasket between the carb. and air box. Also had luck having the carb. loose on the manifold. Steve

When I worked for Don L we usually removed manifold and all, but I kept a C bent wrench in my truck,it would work on distributors too Dave

The carburetor is loose on the manifold on the two stud bolts but the real problem is getting that back bolt in to the air cleaner box . Just getting it started as a problem, nothing is lined up perfect so it?s really hard to start that bolt

I have assembles the carb to the engine on the C and D series quite a few times. As I recall the L has more clearance.

The secret is bite the bullet and start grinding on a HIGH STRENGTH(Craftsman) open end wrench the right size (9/16 as I remember). Thin down both prongs on the outside to about half thickness. the wrench is now less strong but will very likely handle the carb bolt okay. It always did for me. Get a HIGH STRENGTH one for Father's day coming up and grind on it if your current wrenches are a set. LOL

If your fingers are thick, the other two tools that help are a pair of long nose plies and a long thin screwdriver.

Start by inserting the intake gasket and carb upward over the vertical stud sticking down out of the intake manifold. Leave loose. Install the outer bolt and gasket at the air cleaner loosely to help alignment.

Insert the problem bolt into the inner clearance hole with the long nosed pliers and pry forceful towards engagement with the screwdriver and the left hand.

Turn the bolt with the special wrench and right hand. Flip the wrench over as needed to get the needed 1/6 turn. Grind the wrench thinner if needed. I found that about 2/3 to 3/4 tight seems good enough.

Its not original but I got tired of fighting that bolt in my DC so I replaced it with a button head bolt that takes a allen wrench. I haven't had a bit of trouble out of it either. Just my 2 cents.
