970 Hydraulic or Transmission problem

Dads pride and joy was this old 970 and his 505 Super I ... when he passed 10 years ago I had to start learning real quick ... pretty much a sweet old tractor but it's been acting funny all winter. Started with the inching glutch working on and off, then remotes wouldn't work unless clutch peddle was pushed in or they would work in PS 2 in any gear. Sometimes it worked sometimes not. Now most of the time when I let the clutch out it acts like the clutch plates aren't fully engaging and won't hardly go (most of the time), if I shove it up into PS 2 it'll lift the front off the ground. Don't have a way of checking pressure but the dash indicator is just on the green and goes clear down to nothing sometimes with the clutch out in and out of gear... this is probably clear as mud... I just need a good place to start I guess... Just changed filters and oil, always had Hy-tran used in it.

Thanks mEL... Would there be anything in the oil?? I didn't find any parts and pieces when I drained it?? Also, one thing I forgot to mention... I ran the pto for a while to help warm the oil up a little, I pulled the front plug first and it was foamed up pretty bad. There did seem to be more than the normal metallic "sludge" in the bottom of the filter canisters.

No you will not find large pieces with this breakdown but you may find brass metallic shavings if you continue to run it like it is and warp or wear friction plates out. After a repair this large you would be wise to replace the Hytran and filters.

Thanks for the info... I'm probably not ready to tackle that big of a job, don't really have a place and the equipment to do it... None of the shops I've called so far have anybody familiar with the transmission. Closest Case dealer is an hour away, may have to have it trucked up there.

Thanks for your time and advice mel... Goes in the shop tomorrow... a guy that I've used before but retired said he would do it as long as I'm not in any big hurry... just hope I didn't do too much damage before I decided it wouldn't heal itself
